Deadheading and/or Reseeding

Jackson, TN(Zone 7b)

When you deadhead your flowers...do you just toss them back into your flowerbeds to reseed...or...do you collect the seeds and save them to plant next season?

I found some dried pod looking things on my cannas. After opening one up...I found some coffee bean looking seeds. Can I plant these? Should I do it now...or wait until next season?

I have Black Eyed Susans that I want to see multiply. How can I make that happen?

Thanks in advance!

Personally, I just let the spent flower heads drop into the flower bed. If there are seeds and they sprout, so much the better. My theory is that any organic matter is good

Usually when you deadhead, you're cutting off the spent flowers before they've had time to make seed, so I wouldn't expect a lot of reseeding as a result. Generally if you want to get seeds, you need to leave the plants alone and not deadhead them.

So...will those pods on the cannas not be new cannas?

the canna seeds will become cannas but you have to nick the hard seed but they will grow

Nogreenthumb, If you dehead the flower once it looks compleetly dead it should be fine

I have a mini rose bush and I was wondering if they made seeds
