mysterious growth on tree

Paradise, Canada

Hi,
One of the young fir trees (about 8-feet tall) on my property has someything else growing out of one of its limbs. One of its horzontal limbs has a vertical growth coming out of it. This growth is about 8 inches laong and as seceral branches of its own. It's needles are thicker, softer, a lighter shade od green, and appear more easily to break than the parent tree. What is it??? Should I be concerned?

Couldn't get you images to pull up but am wondering is fire blight common to Canada. If that is what it is you have major problems. Nothing you can do but destroy the tree before it spreads. You need to check with a local agency.

I did pull up the photos. It looks to be some kind of scale possibly. It's not fire blight which is a disease of apple and pear trees and some ornamental trees.

See if any of these look like what your tree has:

Fire blight will kill other trees as well. Had a friend who lost 2 giant oaks in his yard to it. Sure hope it's not this. Good luck.

No, I saw a photo of fire blight, and it doesn't look anything like that.
