Edibles - '09 - Part3

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yummy!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm told that Sungold is low acid. I can no longer eat fresh tomatoes, as much as that kills me, because they really do a number on my tummy. I plan to try Sungold, but I'm still chicken. Last summer was the first in four or so years that I was not in agony.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

back - stomach - no moss on top - you going to be alright?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll survive. The stomach is fine now. The shiny head is more of an asset than you can imagine!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

easier to check for ticks for sure!!

And headbutts look more impressive.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, folks!! I am really excited that the weather has co-operated for me, though sad it has not been thusly so for all around the NE.

I have barely had to water, the rains have been scattered, with breezy sunshine in between. Still haven't had any real heat of which to speak, and the cool nights have been followed by mild days.

I guess shaking d'hem snake eggs and chicken bones works!

Sorry to hear about the tomato issue, Victor .... I would not like that at all!! I know my neighbor used to grow an heirloom German tomato that was "low acid" .... not a clue which.

(Was interrupted by a customer!)

Acorn Squash looks great, too.

HeHeHe ..... Hey! I am not sure I will EVER have another growing season like this!! I need to document it, 'cuz NO one would believe it!!!

Besides, you can rub it in when it starts snowing!! ^_^

Here's the spaghetti squash starting to wander.

I need to get some fruit trees going! My apple is pathetic, and my neighbor's has a disease that is spreading to mine.

Here is the winter squash taking over the fence line.

I also planted a Pumpkin - Big Max - before I knew I would have a volunteer patch!

If you look carefully, down the center, you will find the Big Max, flanked by the winter squash (left) and the acorn squash (right)

Man - how big is your veggie garden?!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Eggplant is finally filling in. Only the Viserba (right row) have been flowering, still holding out on the Lavender Touch (left row)

I think this area is only about 350 square feet, actually. The railroad ties are 9 foot. There are two squares and the long bed is 3 ties by 1 tie. Two of those beds have large pines in them, too, so I don't have full use of those beds.

I plant kind of close together, maybe, too .....

Plus, I added three new, small areas for extras, AND, I still have more tomatoes to plant, as mentioned above!

Here are some eggplant flowers .... which I am really liking.

My beans and peas are just pitiful! Not sure what is goin on there!

I planted them late, and few are coming up, those that are get attacked. There are a couple that look OK. Just planted these a week or so ago.

Cukes are still just starting to kick in with the growth, but the fruits are a slow coming.

Hot Pepper Piccante Calabrese

I got these started on time, but planted later than the Tollie's and they seem to be doing a LOT better in the leaf growth, but just flowering yet, no fruits forming.

My one and only pea plant has flowers so I hopefully I will have a one and only pea to eat ^_^ My camera is still blinking 'memory card full' 'memory card full' memory card full' sigh so I'm stuck for pics til I take it to cameraguy to figure out. The camerawizardguy in the puter SO doesn't have wizard powers.

WNYwillieB you're just booming!!!!

I have only two peas and 7 beans .... yikes .... I will plant more seeds this weekend.

Here is the leaf lettuce patch .... mostly mesclun and 6 romaine.

This is yet another ad hoc garden, as I needed more room to plant things.

OK ... last one ..... for now!!

Very nice, Willie---I'm jealous of those peppers---mine are sad looking---so is the egplant. Here is a long view---I weeded, hoed, & fertilized---now it better start producing!

Thanks, Robin! Lookin' good over there, too! I am hoping I can start getting more than swiss chard and basil soon!

Howdy, Gang! I've been away for 5 days and I have to share a shot of my son's gigantic head of broccoli in his small veggie garden. This thing weighed almost 10 pounds! It is next to a "regular" sized head from another of his plants. We ate half of the Giant Guy last night for dinner and he gave the other half to neighbors who brought people over to see it a couple times while we were there.

We got home late last night (phone was out and still is!) from the bad weather here while we were away. The grass is as high as an elephant's eye and the most exciting news ever is that the new Roundup I used did away with every gallant soldier.....at last!!! I really did hate using chemicals, but there was no drift onto my crops, thankfully! My garden looks pretty puny......broccoli's ok, potatoes seem ok, tomatoes and cukes are WAY behind and the peppers look pretty lame. Onions seem on track and the sunflowers are inching upwards.

I now have 6 sections of the garden that are just sitting there empty. I looked at the maturity dates on several packets of seeds, and I think I'm not going to waste the effort in planting my zinnias and glads this year. I filled one section with lettuce today, but the chippies we have this year will probably have a feast. We'll have to find satisfactory diversions at our September gathering so you won't all be ashamed of my lame efforts in the veggie department this summer.

Hi Louise! Wow - some broccoli!!

You do have to wait a time after using Roundup before planting. Does it say how long on the bottle?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hi Victor! ooops....forgot to check......my new lettuce bed may be history with the new added feature of weed preventive in the Roundup. It was about a week between using the killer and planting the pelleted lettuce seeds. We'll just have to see how this works out.

I'm harvesting our own broccoli tomorrow while the heads are peak. They are nowhere near as large as the one I just posted. It had a delicious flavor.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Maybe you will be ok wiht the Roundup DonnieBrook with all the rain? WOWSER that broccoli is outstanding!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hope so, Dahlia! I'm frankly surprised that nothing else that was growing in proximity was harmed. I got a bit lazy about covering things up. If I can just get ahead of the Soldiers with all of their seed generations, I'll feel we've had a winning summer no matter how the veggies do. So far, we've had no soldiers make it to full flower, and that's the KEY!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I use a concentrated Roundup on creeping bellflower and the label says it only works on plants if it comes in contact with the foliage and that there is no effect on the soil. I don't have to use it near any edibles and it doesn't profess to be a 'prevenative' which makes a big difference methinks.
