Edibles - '09 - Part3
Yes, Sherrie----white maggot type worms! Now I eat only the root! Tied up tomatoes again today---the heirlooms (most) have small green fruits---the ones I raised, just blossoms---beans also blossoming---squash budded.
i only like the beet greens - garlic, olive oil and balsmic - wife eats the beets
Only eat the beets if they are pickeled.
I'm looking forward to my cukes. Found some baby ones forming today. I have about 7 tomatoes forming and still green yet. Still some lettece too.

I love beets.
I like beets but never think to buy them - I'll have to now.
too early here for cukes due to weather and having too re-plant- finally have plants though! We do have a number of little tomatoes.
Harvested the broccoli the other day. It went from small heads to big ones in just a couple days, seemingly during the constant rain we were having. Unfortunately, some of the middles of the heads started to spoil, probably from having water constantly sitting on top. But, I just cut out the bad parts and saved the rest. Now we just wait for the side shoots to develop a bit.
And I got a first meal of sugar peas the other day too. Found you really have to let the Mammoth Melting Sugar Pea get "mammoth" for the best flavor. I picked some when they were 3 inches long and they were OK, but not really sweet. Let them get to 4-6 inches long however and the sweetness develops.
Same here with the cukes, flowering and little babies and had to replant one hill. Zukes are 4-6" long same with summer squash. Broc and cauli have no heads started yet.
All pepper plants are pitiful.
Tomatoe plants - I dont even want to talk about them. I tried to do a collage POOF. The one on the left is 6/27 and the one on the right is 7/6. 10 days most of them have grow well over the stakes and the hoops. I will NEVER plant 81 tomatoe plants again in my lifetime or you people hit me with flower petal or better yet rose bush stems without being dethorned.
My pepper plants are in flower. One has been chewed to almost nothing. Who knows by what, DH has 5 other ones doing fine.
I picked 3 cherry tomatoes today. DGD helped. They are visiting from OR. Also some puple green beans that will turn green when cooked. I'll let you know. And zucchini is coming on. After not having success for 2 years, I planted about 8 plants. Now they are doing well. Yippee!!!
Now you'll need plenty of recipes, Jan. Sherrie, your toms look very nice---they are about the size of mine. I lost 2 pepper & 2 cabbage plants---bunching onions are way sad!
2 of my pepper plants are chewed up as well...
let me know when the blackberries are ready Victor... that's when I want to come over and see your garden
;)
Let me know too! I'll come the night before and raid the place. Muha ha ha ha!
I'm planning on room for plane parking on the patio/dance floor. Victor I think the Homeland security dudes need a GPS location to make this doable. Victor? Yoo Hoo? Mrs. Victor? Kidlings in the Treehouse? Marauding deer? Anyone?
LOL
Hee hee! Still waiting for the dance floor to be sealed!
Victor what are you sealing it with? I think you have to be careful finishing dance floors so you don't lose the slippyness that you need to glide and dip about.
Blackberries--yum---the domesticated ones froze out on me, but I have black raspberries---I know, not the same!
I highly recommend this variety - Triple Crown. Huge, delicious and thornless.
DH stepped on one of my lettece plants by accident. I guess it's really smooshed. He harvested what he could for me.
delicious & thorn less.... sounds like a winner!... full sun right?
Yes.
sigh
Mmmmmm Blackberries!! I was just talking about growing some the other day. We used to have them under the one oak tree, I think I have mentioned, until it became to shady for it. BUT, now that the other oak has been "murdered" ^_^ I now have plenty of sunshine there again!
I will definitely seek out triple crown!
Hey! Look! Finally! Peppers!!
