Unusual Gardening Conditions

Raleigh, NC

The back corner of my garden gets deep shade until about 2:30 pm and then gets hot sun for four hours. I have not had much luck with planting there. The shade plants do well until June and then burn up. The sun plants reach for the sun and end up spindley or small. Help! Any suggestions for plants that can handle those two ends of the spectrum conditions?

I just bought spotted dead nettle (laminum m. 'shell pink' ) for just those conditions. Have not put in yet.

Also - althought won't bloom as well but still habit is very pretty, leaves etc. you may want to try baptisia. Edgeworthia will take sun and shade and I have one in the conditions you speak ---shady morning and hot hot sun afternoon and against a house so really hot I bet.

Pieris will grow beautifully in both conditions
I think (think) abelia will also.

Thank you! I will try those.

not sure if you were looking for flowers or shrubs - etc. the edgeworthia are beautiful in bloom and fragrant but not so hot the rest of the year. Google the photos of things before you purchase.

This Lamium spread's like crazy. I do not advise you plant it, unless you want it everywhere. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/158/

I read that if you shear it after it blooms it will not spread overmuch.

Lamium maculatum, stay's in bloom here from early Spring to late November. I have been yanking it from near by plant bed's as well. If you like something that will take over rather quickly .....this is one plant you want to have.

Can you recommend a good source? Do I plant it in the fall or wait until spring?

I got mine at Southern States in Chapel Hill (Carrboro) I have seen on the net but much more $$.

I got my Lamium on my way to Mt. Airy last Spring. It was one of the nurserie's going down Fancy Gap Mtn. before you hit Canna.

These stay here year around so I would say you could plant them in either Spring or Fall but give it alot of space;-)
