I have these small type of tile carpet pads in the basement. I wonder if I could use those to put around my tomatoe plants to stop these mass weeds I have in the garden.
The bottom of the mats have a rubber base and I wonder if that would stop rain from getting to the plant where it needs it most. Has anyone used those 1x1 carpet squares?
Preventing weeds with carpet mats I have?
Will stop weeds in the short term, but deteriotes over time and becomes ineffective and is quite a chore to remove.

I think the rubber would block water to your plant. Carpet probably also has chemicals used in the backing and fibers, I would be worried about it leeching into the soil directly around edible plants. I would try something else like newspaper covered with hay or mulch.
