Cutting my pineapple plant - help please!

Chicago, IL

I have a pineapple plant that was grown from the top of a pineapple and it now stands about 6 feet tall. All of the lower leaves have fallen off and there are plenty of leaves at the top and an offshoot in the middle of the plant - is there anyway that I can cut the plant down and save the top and the offshoot?

If the plant has not produced a Pineapple yet, it needs the leaves for energy to do so.

Any photos to show?

this is the offshoot - it has never grown a pineapple and I want to keep the plant but it is too tall and I want to know if I can cut it down and how can I save the offshoot making two plants out of it?

You do not have a Pineapple plant.

The plant is Dracaena fragrans 'Compacta'.

Really - I was told it was a pineapple plant by the person that gave it to me - if I cut the top and put it in water will it get new roots?

Chicago, IL

this is not a dracaena fragrans as the leaves are not shiny and do not have yellow center stripes - I believe it is from a cut pineapple top - the leaves are had and not at all shiny

There are many varieties of Dracaena fragrans. A variety that fits your description with "yellow center stripes" would be Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana'.

Your variety is Dracaena fragrans 'Compacta'.

You don't have a Pineapple, you have a Dracaena!
I am very familiar with Pineapples (Ananas comosus 'Cayenne') and Dracaenas; they are both grown on a large scale in Hawai'i. I grow a lot of them myself.

I agree with Dave, it is definitely a Dracaena and not a pineapple.

ok well can I cut it down and if I put it in water will it get roots?

Yes! Let it sit in water for a few days then put it in soil and root it, keep it in shade and moist.

I thought the first description sounded a bit odd for a pineapple! Anybody in HI absolutely knows about those, just pop it the ground LOL! Mmmmm, pineapple.....

I agree it looks like a Dracaena compacta that needs a trim. It will never grow new bottom leaves so it's the only way to go if you want to get rid of the empty spaces.
Sometimes they take a bit to put out roots on the cutting, or to grow a new shoot from the base, so be patient & don't give up ;)
