Becky's MGs and Other Plants Part 8

Diluted Fuji no Muraski! We had a downpour last night and this poor bloom took a beating! And YES! that is a rare ripe seedpod from this vine. I am definitely going to grow one indoors in my window. I want lots of seeds from this beauty!

Aogkiyama x Chocolate Silk cross. Big, bold, and beautiful!

Large bloom of Fuji no Sora cross. I like this vine. It is actually really attractive and the blooms are always nicely formed and perky!

This is a lone bloom on my LYK this morning. It is a cross of LYK and Youjiro Chachamaru with a gene of Blizzard on it. Unfortunately, no pollen! Which stinks!!! Grrr ...

And last vine for now...

Yellow Chinese Evening glory. Which also seems to be doing fine after the bleach incident. We have had rain every day and I have been noticing the leaves turning yellow on this one and dropping. I may have to bring it in to my porch whenever it rains. I also just bought a larger pot for it to transplant it in. It has pretty much outgrown the indoor window pot. Look at how many vine branches are coming off of this lone vine. I wonder if it blooms in Fall or Winter. No amount of bloom fertilizer seems to want to coax any bloom buds to form. :-/

More gorgeous blooms Becky. I wonder if your
Chinese yellow evening glory prefers to bloom in the fall after
temps cool? My Merremia aurea (yellow) is growing well with no sign of buds. I'm thinking it might also prefer cooler temps to bloom.

Beautiful plants Becky. I had one of those Clerodendron for a few years but it died. When I pulled it up nematodes had destroyed the roots. Here is another pic of my Coral Vine. I took this one this morning as the early sun hit it.

Jackie - I looked up the weblink on the Evening Glory: http://www.natureproducts.net/Forest_Products/Convolvulaceae/evening_glory.html and it says that it blooms in the dry winter months. So it probably likes the cooler, drier climate to bloom. Which also may explain why it is getting yellow leaves that drop when we have a lot of rain here. It doesn't seem to mind the drier hot weather as long as it gets watered when it starts to wilt. I moved it into a bigger pot and added taller bamboo stakes for it to climb. Hopefully it will continue to thrive in this bigger pot. As far as daily growth, it rivals the I. indica vine! :-) I had no idea it was going to become such a lush vine. Though it is much smaller in leaf and vine size, but big on growth! It is one of my more attractive MG vines currently. :-) I really like it a lot!!! It is supposed to get small yellow clusters of blooms! Won't that be pretty?!

gardenpom - Love your pink coral vine. No bloom buds yet on mine. Do you fertilize yours?

I found another beautiful white bloom on the Passiflora "alba" incarnata. That vine is only about 20" tall. LOL! It has big aspirations, I suppose!

I also found out that the Caladium seeds pictured above are NOT the seeds, but the white fruit berries! Ha! The seeds are inside each berry. I have to open each tiny berry with tweezers and remove the teeny seeds. There are at least 2 - 10 seeds in each fruit. They are itty bitty seeds. Reminds me of strawberry seeds! Ack!!! But I love a good challenge, so I started one batch of seeds and will start the other today. I let the first batch dry out so they had to be tossed. (I didn't know...) I will have a LOT of Caladiums sprouting if my sowing works! :-) I love my caladiums. They bring so much color to my garden beds. I think I am going to use them as the constant repeat plant in my garden.

Oh! And I found out that my Variegated Spider plants (in my hanging baskets) also produce seeds as well as baby spider plants from the aerial runners. So I pulled off all the seed pods and collected seeds from them. I was reading where folks use them in their garden beds in the ground! That sure was an enlightening idea! I never even thought of growing them in the ground! Very cool! Here is one of two Spider plants in a hanging basket on my screen porch. Both have tons of babies hanging on to them and both bloom constantly! I have seeds if anyone is interested. Or maybe I should share the seeds in the group seed swap???

I have not fertilized it since it was very small, and I was trying to establish it. I would recommend using some liquid fertilizer every week or so.

Thanks! I will do that! :-)

Becky, I wonder if the Mexican Hydrangea will come back if I plant in a container.

Nicole - I lost all but 3 of my Plumeria from the many days of freezing temps we had here this past winter. Makes me sick. But I've taken some good advice to heart that I received from another DGer (Paige) whom I first met on DG. She told me that she doesn't coddle any plants. They are on their own (except for feeding, pruning, watering, and mulching) when she plants them in her garden. They either survive or die. And if they die, she won't bother with that plant species or cultivar again. :-) She told me that the ones that she used to coddle almost certainly always died from her overly-loving care. There IS such a thing as loving a plant to death! It's better to leave them be! :-) I have found her advice to be soooo true! I try not to let any plant become too important in my garden because that will surely be the end of it! LOL!

As far as the Mexican Hydrangea ... they are invasive. So ... producing runners makes them pretty darn hardy! Which is why I will NOT plant mine in the ground. Mine survived the freezing temps this year and came back just fine. You might need to cover the pot if you get snow. It couldn't hurt to give it a try. :-) Mine blooms constantly. It is in a pot wwwwway too small for it's roots. And their is a dish under the pot to keep the roots from find their way into the ground. And it is thriving. It drops leaves, but 5 more replace everyone that drops! LOL!

Debra and Nicole - I don't know how easy the Mexican Hydrangea is to propagate. Not sure if I could root cuttings or collect seeds (I've not seen any at all) or what? Must do some research. If I can get some starts of that bush, I will share with both of you. :-) I don't even remember how I got it. It was a trade. Possibly a runner that someone sent me. I received it 2 years ago in the midst of a whirlwind of trading when I first joined DG.

Debra - Sorry to hear that you are missing your blooms! I know the feeling. I get up at the crack of dawn just to see mine when school is in session! I take lots of photos because I can't enjoy them otherwise as I am in such a hurry to get ready for work! LOL!

Dany - OH YESSSS! How funny that you should bring that up because I was bagging seeds today from last Fall (bad Becky!) and had all these crosses. I was thinking how ridiculously absurd it is to have them labeled by the crosses instead giving them a new unique name. I think you are right! I need to name these crosses. I will probably enlist everyone's help on naming them. I will start a new thread at some point this week just for that purpose! Thanks for giving me a little kick to get motivated in that direction! :-) ;-)

Time for a new thread. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1014233/ Come on over to see some NEW surprises!
