Becky's MGs and Other Plants Part 8
The tipsy pot of MGs plus my Caladiums. I have successfully pollinated three caladium blooms. I crossed them to see what I could create. I've got the seed pods in little crepe fabric baggies to catch the seeds when they drop otherwise they would be lost in the ground to ants and whatever eats them...
This huge Sunflower bush is growing back from a harsh pruning I have to do to it at least 6 times a year. Unfortunately, I can't let it get tall enough to bloom because it is so close to my house. The blooms are huge yellow blooms and the bees go nuts for the nectar.
I grew this one from a cutting that I just literally stuck in the ground and forgot about. I don't do anything to it. If I do, the leaves turn yellow and drop. It doesn't like to be fussed over. My kinda plant!

Ooooh! I really love that Pink Coral Vine photo of yours, gardenpom! Beautiful blooms! Thanks for showing me what I have to look forward to! I think I am going to be very happy to have it as an addition in my garden! :-)
In my yard, usually what the bees like, so do the butterflies ... and even the hummers. :-)
I'm still seeing my hummer. It's a female and she is sticking around. I can't help but wonder if she might have a nest somewhere. I live in an area that would be perfect for a protected nest. :-) Maybe I will see some additional hummers at some point this summer! ;-)
The one thing that I am lacking in my gardens is garden art. I need some pieces of interest. I've spent so much time working on the plants, but have very little items of interest as far as garden art. I need to try to hit some yard sales and pick up old junk for dirt cheap that I can recycle as garden props.
I would love to get an old chair that I could repaint in a bright color to sit a pot on and even use to let vines climb. :-) Any other ideas? What do you use in your yard as featured garden art? I need cheap ideas due to no garden budget right now.
I don't have much garden art either. I need to go get some round rocks, just to give it textures.
Becky, I got my little iron chair pot holder at a adav store, my bathtub planter at a garage sale for 50 cents, and my storck bird feeder that is covered up now for 12 dollars at a place called Tuesday Morning, and my windmill from Pauline... I realy love your place, you don't need any garden art, it is a work of art!
Debra - How cute! I really do need some art to make the garden more whimsical. I found this website with some really cute ideas: http://www.primitiveblessings.com/catalog.php?category=371
Would love to see what else you and others use as garden deco! I am sorely needing some inexpensive ideas. I need to hit goodwill and other thrift stores to see what they have that I could re-cycle for my garden. :-) I want a chair or two in my garden. The only drawback is the hurricanes. If we get one and I have to move all the garden stuff into the garage, that's gonna be a pain ...
Becky,
I wouldn't worry too much about the coral vine - I remember seeing them growing here in Pretoria when I was a girl an we came here to do shopping. You know the "When it is school holidays we are going to Pretoria" outing? It was fashion then to grow them, but since the Bougainvillas came into fashion, and you hardly ever see them. I just loved them. The show they put on was out of this world. It was one of the reasons I wanted to come here after finishing school.... I grew up in Belfast where the winters are so cold that almost everything dies due to frost. Oh yes, another plant that just "did" it for me was Monstera deliciosa. I always wanted one when I was at school, but they didn't even grow nicely inside the house. Now I take them out because they are "just another Delicious Monster" getting in the way. LOL!!!
Becky, Love the pink powder puff, Calliandra and your snow on the mountain
which looks like Breynia Rosea Picta
Jackie - My Snow on the Mountain shrubs are: Breynia disticha. Same family species I suppose. I really love these shrubs and their beautiful variegated leaves. New plant species comes around Florida every year and this one ... I only started seeing this plant about 5 years ago. I fell in love with it the minute I saw it!
Thanks for the information about the Pink Coral vine, Elsa! I really think I am going to like that plant species a LOT! I already love the foliage and shape of the leaves. I don't know what it is about vines, but I just can't seem to get enough of them. I need a much bigger yard! LOL! The Monstera deliciosa plant is very common here. I don't grow anything "common" in my yard except Zinnias and other filler blooming plants! LOL! My neighbors can't get over the fact that I don't have any Palm trees. I used to, but the hurricanes in 2004 destroyed them and I decided they weren't worth the trouble to grow any more. lol
I thought I had a lot of blooms yesterday ... today proved to be even better! LOL! Must be the rain, the compost I added to these vines, and sheer good fortune. Here are some bloom flushes/clusters from today. This is Blue Shibori with some solid blue blooms. This blue is such a deep true blue.
I am almost afraid to say this, for fear of jinxing myself, but I've had a lot of rain lately, but have NOT had rust problem yet. I hope it continues that way this year!

Knocked me right off my chair!! Absolutely stunning...definitely boldly asking for seeds!!
Ronnie - I am sure I will get plenty of seeds from this vine, so you will definitely get some. Just keep a running list as I won't remember. You know me ... I do a blast dmail when I am ready to trade/share! :-)
LOL Ronnie I am in line for seeds of this drop dead beautiful JMG! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6774786
Ronnie - This vine bloom colors look a little different depending on angle and how close I am when I take the photo. My camera doesn't always get the color I see with my eyes. Here is a photo of Aogkiyama x Chocolate Silk cross showing the entire variegated vine (mixed in with Diluted Fuji no Muraski). It's loaded with seed pods (unlike DFNM). I hope this doesn't disappoint. I got this cross from Antoinette and am not sure how the cross wound up looking like these blooms! I am also curious how a second generation vine/blooms will turn out if some of the genes show up that aren't coming out on this grow-out. The blooms have been very consistent. No variations.
Just incredible pictures.
This is my first year growing some, they were a gift from another gardener.
Received two plants don't know the names, one is blooming its head off and the other one is just growing and growing vine. Maybe one of these days it will bloom. They are planted right next to each other.
Here is a picture of the one blooming.
Janet
edited as becky you and I were posting at the same time.
I so love that variegated vine. Where did you get it?
Also how do you collect seeds from MG?
