Thank you for posting your son's blog again. I missed the link the first time.
No such thing as fall or that "W" word. It will be spring & summer ForEver.......
yaaaaaaaaaaah Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And I'm in Denial (sorta like the Queen of Egypt lol)
It's going to be 30c & dry today..... watering my "grass" again, and again, and again.
2 - 3 times a day.........
A co-worker of mine said she got beautiful grass with Canada Perfect Grass, so now I've got to wait and see what happens - took 2 weeks, she said.
What's Happening in Your neighborhood-visit with friends #20
Well it certainly did nothing for me, but I should go purchase more grass seed, just to thicken what I have...
No rain yet...
I suppose you could have gotten a "bum package" - it's sure been known to happen!
It's soooooooo dry here in Calgary, I can't go with a landscaper in Winnipeg's advice, and only water every 3 days...we get humidy regularly of 29%, and in Winnipeg it gets to 75% in the summer.....like hitting a wall when you go out.
Hmmm, I remember that about Southern Manitoba. Our temps have been in the mid thirties for the past week and a half; yesterday 36C and the forecast is for the same temperature today and with no relief in site for the next couple weeks. But our humidity is at 31%. The summer I spent in southern Manitoda, near Winnipeg, was the most uncomfortable I have ever been in my life. High temps COMBINED with very high humidity and it just never cooled off at night. That's where their dehumidifiers are a must.
Don - it would sometimes be 4am before it started to cool down and you could sleep, and when the sun started to rise - it was heating up again.
We've had, with humidex, 50c in Winnipeg. Talk about MUGGY!
Oh yeah..that's nasty. Give me dry heat anytime. And the lovely thing about living in a mountainous terrain, by 9:00pm, the AC can be shut down and windows opened for some nice cool fresh air. Nice for sleeping.
79 here, overcast...enjoyable though..
Went to lunch at the bar across the street, don't know if any of you remember Eddie Shack-hockey player..he was there..omg what a loud man..walked in with a young woman, said he just married her...doubtful because 1/2 way through he introduced her as a friend...
I remember Eddie Shack - sounds like he'd hit a few bars before he got there..........
I really dislike loud people - either they have a super-ego, or they have low self-esteem.
It makes having an enjoyable lunch difficult.
A few of the older restaurant patrons asked him for his autograph, made his day I would imagine..think he's 72 now..walks with cane..living through his youth I would imagine..
I know that growing old is difficult for Athletes who have excelled in the world of sport.
My dad was the darling of England back in his day and he has become very jaded towards athletes who a, make tons of money and b, those who use drugs.
In his day it was for the glory of sport and bettering yourself and your country.
At any rate he is a super Dad and number one Grandpa.
My sister who married an American athlete has looked into the psychology of the aging athlete and found some very intersting things. Especialy when they have peaked at an early age like in their 20's.
Anyway I'm rambling so bye for now.
Ann
Ramble away, ann! I find people an interesting study, and quite enjoy looking into why people DO certain things.
Me, f'instance - I'm a Real Case lol
Sooooooooooooooooooo .. here we be .. lotsa weather over the country ..
We FINALLY got a BIT of rain and am hoping for MORE please ..
Took my Taurus in for a safety .. gonna sell it .. needs BRAKES $600. ............ so .. will whack that offa the price and go from there.
Lilly spent about (no kidding) close to 2 hours waiting on a squirrel to EXIT a feeder .. pic attached ..
Then she came in with WET feet, which Smokey ALWAYS has to groom for her ~~ another pic for ya..
Jordan Staal had the Stanley Cup in TBay yesterday .. THOUSANDS came out to see it.
There's a 'family connection' with him .. but too convoluted to get in to :-)
He and his bothers are very nice boys (men) .. as always .. they are Dutch .. and VERY humble.
2 pics
~M~
awwwww your lily and smokey are so sweet and devoted. They're adorable, too
:-)
Pouring rain here..need it though..not so sure Jeff would agree but he did purchase rain clothing for his kayak trip, am sure he'll be ok..calling for much the same the next 3 or 4 days...
Adorable..that little squirrel sure is brave..
Laughing about the squirrel .. that is supposedly a 'SQUIRREL PROOF' seed feeder !! It took this little guy NO time at all to get into it .. HOWEVER .. getting out quickly and safely with a wee Westie looking up at you waiting for you to make your FIRST and LAST mistake .. well .. lets just say that humans have come the rescue several times .. but .. very carefully !! I lifted the feeder of the hook a few weeks back so as to transfer it to the other side of the fence .. and half way there the lil beggar jumped out onto ME !!!! ... the video (had one been taken) would have been award winning i am sure LoL Lordie .. I looked like I was in the ballet the way I was running about the yard .. little Lilly provided the music .. "Air on a Dog bark in 'G'" ... sooooooooooo .. I'm careful now ..
Hopefully Jeff will be very dry in the rain gear .. or .. at leasy semi dry ..
I am totally jealous you Easterners are again having rain .. we have sunshine .. we got .. A BIT.. yesterday .. and are hoping for A BIT more tomorrow.
The relatives in Summerland BC are sweltering .. the lowest their daytime temp will go this week is 33C !!!
Picked strawberries today ... off to make a pie ..
~M~
OMG "M" I've never seen such heavy rain..can't even see outside that's how heavy..sure am hoping that it stops before we leave at 3:00...getting new tires..everyone can't believe I'm changing tires on a new car..just goes to show you how many miles I put on...
Today is Jeff's 10th day and rain...thought you might enjoy reading his yesterday antics....
Enjoy your day..
Day 9 - Suck it up!
For those in the office pool who figured I would call it quits at the first sign of bad weather, you just lost your money. I figure there had to be a category for that one too. Was a good day all things considered.
Going to start off from where I ended last night, I get to the lock and one of my first questions to the lockmaster, "do you have a racoon problem here?", reply... "Never seen one". Whew, I had to store food in tent because I couldn't easily get into kayak. Ok, so I just finish updating my blog when I hear the now all too familair sound of fighting racoons, they sound like screaming babies, very freaky. I slap on the headlamp and pop out to see what's up. There is a garbage can 50 feet away and I can see those eyes staring back at me when the light hits them.
I first try and scare the critter by running towards, stomping feet, waving arms and shouting, she looks at me like what are you, new? I must be getting crazy out here cause we talk for a bit and I think we've come to a mutual understanding and I head back into tent. Fast forward to 3am.
My tent has a fly attached which forms a dome over my tent shell , which is pretty much all mesh for ventilation. Perfect design to open eyes and stare into face of my new little friend, let's just say I was a little startled. I'm pissed now, she broke our previously agreed upon arrangement!
I debate giving her a shot with my bear banger flares but decide not to wake up the town of lakefield, I go put my foodbag into the washroom so it's locked up, turn on my headlamp and leave it on pointing out, figure maybe she would stay away if the light was on. Don't know if she came back, was out like a light. Found out in the morning they were after the tbone steak scraps my boat neighbors threw out, thanks guys, all wrapped up nice in your cruiser.
Wake up around 6:30 and forcast calling for thundershowers in the afternoon, I walk to mcdonalds for egg mcmuffin and coffee, suprisingly the coffee is so good, I'm a die hard tims fan but I could switch now.
By the time I get back it has started to rain, I said I would paddle in any condition but lightning, I pack up all my gear in the rain then find a lower landing spot about 50 meters back behind the lock wall, carry all my stuff there and pack kayak, was better than navigating the four foot wall again. Empty water out of cockpit and foam seat it drenched from the rain overnight. Fun sitting in a puddle right off the bat. Hit first lock with my houseboat buddies from the day before. Wearing motocross jersey, shorts, paddling shoes, paddle jacket and shorts.
As I get thought lock at 9 the rains stops and I'm getting hot, take off jacket and store under deck. No sooner do I do that, it starts sprinkling again. Decide to leave jacket off, big mistake. I race the houseboat to next lock (did 8 locks today). He beats me, barely. I beat him to the next 3, I can get out of lock quicker, as soon as there is enough room. About 1/2 click to nassau mills lock rain pours, the kind where when it hits water the splash pops up about an inch. Now soaked.
There is a hold up at the lock and have to wait half hour, have my umbrella out to keep rain off, remembered to leave in kayak. Smart move. Getting a little cold now from sitting still. Once in lock I hop out of kayak, strip off jersey and put warm paddling jacket back on. All the difference in thew world. Next lock reterborough, 6km. The view wasn't all that spectacular on this section, componded with torrential rain. Despite that, I'm actually enjoying the paddle, wind behind so no struggling and today is the shortest schedule distance day at 16km. I did 18 though. Lol.
Get to peterborough lift lock and there is half hour wait and raining hard. I'm now cold and fingers white and wrinkled. Lift lock is amazing but just a bigger version of kirkfield. I came from. The top so you don't see it in all it's splendor. Rain stops as I exit but wet, little paddling and I warm up. Go through next lock and totally miss the channel split marker, duh. I see the dock in peterborough and head there. Opposite way from lock direction. Get there and realize, turn around and head back. On the way I paddle through the big water fountain in the middle of lake, wet anyway.
Starts pouring again and sky looks black. Make it to the last lock where I'm camping around 2. Lockmaster tells me I can tale the canoe chute if I like. It's 45 degree cement with rollers and exits on dam side in rapids, I say no way am I riding that down, paid 80 bucks for lock pass, gonna use it, he says no, you walk canoe down not ride, we both laugh. I use the lock anyway.
I unpack clothes and strip down right on dock, don't care at this point, want warm clothes, fleece sweater and pants, warm instantly. Get camp setup and it starts to pour again with lightning this time. I go for a nap and wake up at 5 and all clear. Make dinner and relax.
Elkie family texts at 6 they are at movie in peterborough do I want a coffee, ah ya. They stop by for half hour then I'm alone again, thanks for stopping by, kind of depressing that they drove here in 20 minutes and took me 15 hours over two days.
This is the first lock where I'm the only one here. Sat outside most of the night looking at stars and relaxing.
Tomorrow is suppose to be more of the same, yeah, knew I would get rain and just happy the first half and the toughest parts were in great weather. Making the best of it and not discouraged in the least. Part of the experience
My issue tomorrow is that it's 60k to next lock with rice lake in between, going to have to find somewhere to camp along the way.
More people took pictures and waved today than any other day, they wanted for scrapbook. Look at the crazy canadian in the rain. Especially when I had my umbrella up.
hahaha good, tough young lad is your Jeff!!
Thanks for posting in the thread - I'm too lazy to go to another site :-)
Thanks for sharing Jeff's ongoing adventures. Enjoy reading it. Your boy is a very entertaining writer. ^_^
Be careful what you wish for!! As in RAIN and LOTS of it .. cruddy as it is having to go out in it .. it is welcomed ..
Jeff sounds to be enjoying the 'wild side' of the locks .. can't imagine the cost to go through !!! Lordie .. does that include DINNER at least !!!
I am THERE with Jeff re McDonalds coffee!! I would NEVER have typed that 3 months ago .. but .. I guess the complaints re their BAD coffee must have started to hit their pocket books. The brand they use now is awesome .. I believe it's made with Arabica beans (ya know 'Juan Valdez on the donkey') .. they had a promortion on for a few weeks a month or so ago .. from opening til 11am the coffee was free .. any size .. that's when I tried it .. WOW .. very good .. and this is coming from a 'tea Granny' LoL
RACCOONS .. isshhyy creatures .. cute babies .. but, on the whole, atagonistic and smelly .. and I can only imagine how many must be becoming Lords and Ladies of all they survey during the Toronto garbage strike.
Someone finally said the "M" word on TV today .. and I am referring to MAGGOTS .. seems no one has wanted to 'go there' as it makes us all a bit squidgy .. but .. a Mom living a block from one of the mini dumps says they are becoming quite a problem .. won't go into any detail here as I am sure you can imagine just fine.
Off to make dinner
Enjoy your weekend whereever you are ^_^

Eeeeeuuww! :(
I totally SECOND that 'Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeuuww' !!

Been reading but nor writing much. We are just starting the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival - a wonderful concert tonight by James Ehnes and Jon Kimura Parker. For the next two weeks I'll be kind of scarce as I'll be working at 31 concerts, last count and attending a few others. Have also been helping out in the office quite a bit to get the volunteer rosters ready.
Tomorrow two concerts. I'm Head-Usher at an afternoon concert and House Manager at one of the two evening concerts- one by Shauna Rolston and an accompanist.
Hope all is well with you.
Ann
♫♪ ♪♫Good for you, Ann! Obviously you'll be very, very, very busy! Of course your music will come first - it's your first love, after all lol

Is this the same one you made last year?
DAWG Joanne!! THAT is gorgeous !!!
Am thinking it's a SUPER year for Hens and Chics. Mine have grown a hujungous amount .. NOT like yours .. but .. if I don't start spreading them around they WILL overtake one of the gardens .. but .. I 'think' that'll be fine and dandy .. will have to move out some Violas and a Sun Rose before that though..
Been busy bein busy here in Thunder Bay .. we hoped for rain .. we got rain .. and now we commence to cutting ALL the grass and deadheading flowers ..
Best of luck and ENJOY the Chamber Music Festival Ann.
My best friends niece from England (well France she goes to school at the Royal Conservatory in London) has been in Quebec for the last 2 weeks studying at a music school in St Irenee .. she arrives in TBay next week and my bud has arranged for her to give a small recital .. has found an acompanist for her .. Jordan plays the Viola :-)
I will have pics I am sure :o)
Tons of yardwork to do .. but will work at it slowly .. neither one of my hands is my friend today ~~
Enjoy your days
~M~
Good morning,
Marilynne - there's a VERY good summer music program at Domaine Forget. Lots of very good instructors and the Royal Conservatory is a very good school. I've love to be there to hear her recital. I hope her travel with her viola goes well. If the airlines giver her any grief, she should call it a "violin", but she probably knows tht already.
Joanne - LOL at those hens and chicks. And what a novel way to grow them.
Have a great day.
Ann
Thought I'd move us over...
