What's Happening in Your neighborhood-visit with friends #20

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

I always tend to think that you're as old as you feel .. mind you .. somedays that can be pretty darned old !!

We are C O O L !!!!!!!!!!! only 61F right now ... NO strawberries in our future here in TBay .. although .. the one local strawberry farm is advertising a 'hopeful date' of July 11 or 12. Slow season here ..

At the moment I have a bunch of crows making me WHACKO .. cawing and .. well .. some other noise they make .. almost sound like Sea Gulls .. am thinking Smokey may have been tousling with a young one and they are letting me know all about it !!!

Betty .. we can shoot a bear out this way if it's a danger to property or life .. still not sure what the shot was all about ..
Thing is .. you shoot a 300 or 400 pound bear .. what do you do with it ? Better to just let them go on their way ..

Weeding got left .. decided I had some house stuff to get to ..

How old do you have to be to be "officially old"????
My mom's just realizing she's old, at 90!! lol

Although my body tells me differently, I don't intend on Ever getting old...... just more set in my ways lol

Years ago, I pictured myself @ 80 as being a crotchety old lady (every neighbourhood needs one........) tending my roses and snarling at the neighbourhood kids to "stay out of my flower beds!!"
I'm not there yet, but I'm more likely to give them a handful of posies for their moms, m'thinks. :-)

Victoria Harbour, ON

lol, that's my kind of old...

I'm a young 30 as long as I don't look in a mirror!

We're running a few weeks late with strawberries as well..last week with all the rain really put them behind..I've only had 1 feed and that was with the 'old gals' lol...

When I lived on the farm we had bears come to the verandah all the time, I wasn't impressed...you be cautious out there...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Broken record here .. 42F as I type this .. yesterday I had the furnace on !!!

Been busy with VCARS .. couple of tragic incidents .. as well .. I am helping to interview some new recruits .. 2 very nice candidates yesterday ..

No bears .. just deer .. .. am pretty cautious about where I head off to on the property .. and have started to carry my cell phone with me .. can just see me up a tree and dialing 911 !!!! LoL

Lilly and I are going shopping today :o) which means she gets to go into PetSmart and drag me up and down the aisles happily sniffing her way through the store .. she does LOVE that store !!

Take care all

OOOOOoooooooooooooo DragonBoat practice tonight !! I'm not rowing .. fubarred hands .. but .. am there for moral support and cheering !!!

^_^

Victoria Harbour, ON

"M" you just gave me a heart attack..saw the 42 and thought you meant celcius...

Too funny, my fingers can barely type, I'm downstairs and it's like a refrigerator...fingers are numb..just went and turned up the heat..nicer weather NOT predicted..in fact, weatherman says another week of cold and rain..

At least when it's winter we KNOW we'll have cold and snow..I just came downstairs to get some fall/winter clothing out to wear today..froze my butt off yesterday..

complain/complain right..at least I don't have to shovel...

Do enjoy your day and if you've warm temps, do tell us about it..will bring some sunshine into our lives...

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Our heat wave here has passed and this is the third day of rainy cooler weather. Ended up I could have filled my rain barrels twice! You can never tell, right? Better weather is expected to move in tomorrow with a high of 31C forecasted by Saturday.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I don't remember what +30ºC feels like. Not sure if we got over +24ºC this year & that was only one day. For the last few weeks it's been around +20ºC for a high.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Joanne - we DID have a high of +27c for One day lol
cool & rainy is the order of the day, apparently..........for the summer!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I must have been at the farm that day

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I think you were, actually lol
well, I'll just have to pop over to the Fairy swap and see if any of the little people can bring us good weather again (getting just a little tired of all this rain.....). It's been bopping back and forth in a day - sun/rain/sun/rain......

Victoria Harbour, ON

No sunshine here..dull/cold, light mist...can't wait for sunshine either..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

All that talk about Global Warming - the seasons sure are changing, and not for the better.........
Good thing we are a hardy lot, and change with the seasons (we just complain about different things - we humans, eh?!) LOL
Here in Calgary, we can have a 20c degree change from am to pm. Wear gloves and a jacket in the morning, and tank top & shorts in the afternoon lol

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

WE .......... are CANADIANS ^_^

Victoria Harbour, ON

That we are...sunshine and high of 24 here...

Glorious day out there and here I am inside..oh well, almost lunch, get to feel the sun on me..

Tonight is portrait class, have 2 hrs. between finishing work and class so I will shop for misc. baby things to put on the cake..shower is Sunday..

Can't believe how after all this rain my gardens seem to need watering...

Got a call last night, someone wanted to have 2 of my rooms ...B & B on the 18th of July..wouldn't you know, I'm gone to Buffalo that weekend..could have made some play $$$$

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - you run a B&B? gosh I wish I were in your end of the country. I've never been to one, and I'd really like to..... no $$ for travelling far though.
There are B&B's in Banff, but they're waaaaaaaaaaay pricey! (tourist country, doncha know!?!)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Susan, my neighbor a few houses up on opposite side of street ran one for years...had to retire because of health issues so she asked me if I'd take over for her..told her that I could only do it from time to time when my schedule permitted..first of all didn't think my house was nice enough but she told me that although it's modest, it's very country and cute and my gardens beautiful to sit in so I went along with it..usually just take excess from local hotels...haven't done anything this year..tooo busy, once I get a few more things done up to make the guests more comfy I'll advertise..nice retirement job...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Busy day with VCARS interviews .. on of the interviewees looked familiar .. after the interview I asked her what her family name before marriage was .. turns out .. I undertook the task of caring for her and her 3 siblings (at the tender age of 10) ! They had immigrated to Canada from Italy to the then Fort William (now Thunder Bay) and moved into a home 3 doors from us. The Nun who was principal at my school called my Mom and arranged for me to accompany the 4 children to school each day .. no English was known .. but .. within 2 weeks I remember how well they were grasping the language. The parents worked hard .. within 5 years the Dad had a construction company, which has now turned into a HUGE conglomerate (for Thunder Bay) .. she said her 2 brothers have often spoken about me over the years .. been a LOoooooooooong time fer sure .. 45 years !!!! I NEVER thought I'd ever to remember something like that .. but .. it's as clear as a bell to me .. right down to the school uniforms we wore LoL

I am so hoping for RAIN !!! Love country living .. but .. even though we have a good well .. running it for a few hours to water worries me .. thunderstorms and rain are predicted later today .. not holding my breath though !!

Bummer re the B&B reservations Betty .. when we were go toGreat Britain we stay exclusively in them .. wonderful.
Susan .. it's a wonder they don't charge for AIR in Banff LoL .. awesome place .. but SHEWIE .. pricey fer sure !!!

Guess I'll head out to water a few beds .. maybe that'll make it rain !!

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

What do you mean, Marilyn - of Course they charge for the mountain air in Banff!! It's one of their "draws" for the tourist trade lol
People come from all over the world just to breathe the fresh air hahahahaha
and it's rarified air at that! (they charge a rare price, too - it's built into everything they have there!)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Isn't that a wonderful story "M" hope you keep in touch with them..

OMG can't believe you actually said you were hoping for rain..I'd be buying water and enjoying the sunshine...calling for nightime torm tonight and rain all day tomorrow...I'll send it your way...

Long day sitting here waiting for 3pm...boring...

Left my portrait supplies in the car from last night so think what I'll do is go get it and play...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Well Betty .. we had MAYBE 20 drops of rain last evening :-(
300 miles north and west of Thunder Bay is a small community called Ear Falls, they had a TORNADO .. 3 people were killed and one person is missing !!!
Seems all the rain passing north or south of TBay .. I have been out watering this morning .. it's a big job as the property is quite large .. I used to ferry around watering cans but use the hose now.
The veg garden will be set up with the sprinkler this evening .. as we have a well we have to be careful .. and .. we have WIND !! Lordie.. seems it's a daily occurence now .. I am looking at my clothesline and know I will again to unravelling T-Shirts from around it before I can reel in the line.

I finally figured out a way to bring my laptop outside .. HURRAH !!! I can bring it out on battery .. but .. on battery the screen is not as bright .. so .. I have it plugged in with an extension cord .. LoL

I do plan to keep in touch with Angie .. turns out she is a nurse here in TBay as well ....

Should go and do some dead heading .. or .. I could just sit here and enjoy the wonderful warm temps and watch Lilly chase flies .. tough decision ^_^

TGIF and have a wonderful weekend everyone

Sitting here "M" watching the clock..not moving at all...little less than 2 hrs...omg it was beautiful shunshie and now, clouding over..knew that was coming...

Prayers for the tornado victims and their families..

I've had branches in the firepit to burn for a good 3 weeks..either it's been raining or the wind has been up so can't take a chance..hoping to burnt and clean it up this weekend...

Looked around last night, house nice and clean BUT I'm losing the battle on cat/dog hair on floor and furniture so might take advantage of the not so nice weather tomorrow and clean..wouldn't hurt..

Next weekend taking mom across the border for the weekend then on the 30th leaving for 10 days..Cincinnatti/Nashville/Memphis/St.Louis/Chicago and home...

Cathy will come to watch the animals so can'thave her sitting in dust/hair..lol

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Haven't been here much lately. I've been organizing the church garden tour which is tomorrow and, in between rain storms, trying to get some mulch spread. I got the rest of the mulch off the driveway yesterday, but still have a couple of piles of it in the garden. We arranged Monday and Thursday for those showing the gardens to view each others and typically, they both turned out to have been decent gardening evenings. Good fun though.

In between all that, I've added 2009 pictures to my Hosta web site. For anyone who wants to view them, they are at: http://violaann.smugmug.com/gallery/7617361_bLwdx

Supposed to rain here tomorrow for the garden tour itself. Boo!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Oh my, what a beautiful collection of hosta's..so healthy looking..

Good luck with your tour tomorrow..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Ann - I quite agree with Blue Wedgewood being your fav - it's mine too!
I was saying to myself "that's my fav, no that's my fav" then I saw Blue Wedgewood, and decided on it. Then I saw your comment in the next slide - it's Your Fav too lol
It's beautiful :-

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I'd love to see your Country Mouse when it blooms!
I know a lot of people seem to think that hosta flowers aren't pretty, but I'm always taken by surprise by the beauty of them.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

A lovely collection, Ann. I am in awe. Thanks for sharing.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Ann
I throughly enjoyed your Hosta show! Thank you for sharing! I have been bitten by the mini bug and am slowly finding them at different greenhouses. I am still trying to ID the one I thought was El Kabitan but it isn't. It was slow to start and finaly has some leaves so I guess i should have another go at finding out what it is.
My Pandora's Box is 3 yrs old and is surviving nicely with Tiny Tears. I've just found Blue Mouse ears and cherish which I will get in this weekend. Shopping for little things is fun!

Very Nice, Betty. Beautiful colors. ^_^

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - your gardens are lovely!
And you have the same orange daylily as I do! I love your pond & fountain. Unfortunately our park doesn't allow water features - mosquito problem, doncha know?!

Ann ... wonderful Hosta pics ... will take a pic of my Hosta grden and let you figure out what I have LoL
I had thought the deer or rabbits got the plants .. but .. POOF .. one morning there they were.

In sorry need of rain here .. ran the sprinkler as long as I felt necessary tonight .. waded through some puddles in the garden to disconnect it .. only to find that the soil an inch down is like DUST!!!

RED plants .. as in ANNUALS Betty ? Salvia, Gerbera Daisy, Petunias on and on .. your gardens look lovely ..

Off to find the cat .. then 'hit the pit' .. 5am comes early !!!!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Betty - love the Maltese Cross and Campanula. I identified yet another variety of Campanula this week - Glomerata. Here it is next to Hosta Korean Snow. And your roses are pretty too. I had one which had three blooms about two weeks ago and now nothing. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised with all the rain we've had.

Marilynne - I suggest that you post your hostas on the Hosta forum. Up to three per thread. (If you start a new thread for each one, it bumps all the current discussions too far down the page). Check out http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/999215/ before you post as it gives you some pointers on the information which will help us make a proper ID.

Well, my garden is as ready as it gets for the garden tour tomorrow. It's supposed to rain. I hope it's just showers and not a steady rain.

OMG they said rain all day, rained for maybe 10 minutes and then sunshine..light breeze..just a wonderful day...

I've been up since 5am, went and did some work on Suzanne/Lenny's floor, last piece of intricate wood to cut, at Walmart was 7:10, left Home Depot at 8:10 home ready to start my day and felt it should be noon..

Got the diaper cake done for tomorrow's shower..

Betty - if all else fails, I'll try to save you some Maltese Cross seeds. they should be easy to send.

Garden tour was today. Rainy. And I'm farthest from the church. Only saw 11 people of about 40 who bought tickets. Those closer to the strawberry social end of things saw more. The rain quit almost exactly at tour closing time though I hear some distant rumbles now and the weather channel has red warning screens. Some of my friends who bought tickets will come see my garden later - I told them they could if they wanted to see the others.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Your diaper cake is adorable, Betty. Good Job!

So sorry to hear about the rain on your Garden Tour day, Ann.

We are back in the heat again. Slowly been creeping up since Thursday. Yesterday was 29C today so far the thermometer is reading 32C. Have emptied my first rain barrel already. They are predicting drought conditons in my region for the rest of the summer, so I guess I should be happy with what I have stored. Wish I would have had more eaves troughs and barrels. Oh well...back to the garden hose in the near future I guess. My neighbors tell me I spoil my flowers anyway...maybe I do.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

sad that the weather didn't co-operate for your tour, Ann!

Gosh I'm tired today - went and dug out 6 cotoneaster hedge bushes (someone was giving them away, free), lifted some heavy soil bags I bought at the GS and now am baking 5 doz hamburger buns.
I was helping my DH to move his ladders, and just before helping him with the last of his 36', I felt my back straining, so he told me not to help, and to rest. Good plan.......... Not so it's "going out" but it's definitely strained enough that I'm not doing anything heavy today, and not a lot of bending..........
Still have 2 1/2 doz buns to bake, and sorting through paperwork (thank goodness for shredders!!). I have too many "tons" of paper to get rid off to clean my den for my Mom's arrival on Aug 1, so she has a "guest bedroom" such as it is. My DH is building a base for the blow-up Q-size matt we're putting down (my aunt will come with her, and likely stay a couple of nights, too...)
