Links beneath the banner?

Kannapolis, NC

One thing on the Garden Plants link I see that I do not like is a link to egames. I don't come to DG to play games, so it makes me wonder.

Edited to say it's a link to GameHouse, not egames.

Whoa.......Maryjane is gone!! It was the poster girl that I found amusing. She was a bit out of the sync for DG.

Kannapolis, NC

Venu209: She was there, because I saw her after I saw your posting. There it was! Maybe the GameHouse will vanish, too.

Well...figured something out. I thought this sponsored link thing would fall under the "forum sponsors" in the Ad preferences and mine was unchecked, but it's under "top watchdog ads" which I do have checked. So if you don't want to see the link under the banner then you have to uncheck "top watchdog ads" in your Ad preferences.

I don't have bugs running around either. Just the mosquitoes flying around within the ad.

Laurel, turn your ads off. If it's coming from the Off ad, turning the ads off will make them go away. If they don't go away, then it's something on your system that's causing it.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thank you Hemophobic. For a minute I thought I was smoking what they were selling LOL

Joan, I'll immediately take your advice. I'm not very compu-savvy but this is what I get every time I try to access anything on DG...http://www.offprotects.com/clip-on-mosquito-repellent/?sid=OLA&cid=dgarden_clip_on I'm not sure how to send you the creepy bugs crawling up the side of the screen.

If the ad appeared and I could click it off it would be annoying, but okay, if it was holding down DG costs. My complaint is that I can't get to pages on the site because the ad won't let me past without the mouse waltz. I appreciate the advice.

Laurel...
Go to My Info there on the banner.

Click Preferences.

In preferences look at the column on the right. Click Ads.

On Ads, make sure all the boxes are clear, not checked.

That ought to help.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I see them but when I told Pollyk she didn't see them.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Maybe she has all the boxes unchecked in Ads.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I had unchecked all ads.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thank you all. Finally a good night's sleep and without bugs.

I was enjoying seeing the Top Watchdog ads, but hate those links, so have disabled the ads to make the links go away. If there is a way to do it, I would like to enable the top watchdog ads again, and just keep those links gone.

Deb

I am so glad I now know why I wasn't seeing them; I see no reason to look at ANY ads at all on a site I am paying for, to be frank. So I unclicked my boxes ages ago.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I se the banner ads. haven't clicke d on any of them and doubt I will. I don't like seeing it hope mouse doesn't accidently click one. But I do like seeign the topg dog ads and I go check out the side top dog ads when I see one I like.

Several times when I've clicked on a product that looked interesting in a top watchdog ad, I've gotten a message that the link is broken or the article is no longer available. That's always weird....

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

I've clicked on a lot of the top watchdog ads in the past, and never got that message. Maybe I've just been lucky. I've never bought anything through them, but I've checked out some pictures of pretty flowers, and put them on my mental wish list.

I enjoy the Watchdog ads. They are constant reminders to me. For instance, right now at the top of this page is a peony, Mons. Jules Elie, and it reminds me to check on mine.

I also love new plants and the Watchdog ads open my eyes as to what's new and most often I head off to buy locally anyhow but I still like it.

Adamstown, MD(Zone 6b)

I agree with others -- I enjoy seeing the Watchdog ads but I really don't like the new banner thing. It makes that area look "busy." Based on what I have seen on the links I clicked, I have no interest in that advertising. Could we get a separate check box in preferences to disable the sponsored links without stopping the watchdog ads?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I agree with Pirl, I enjoy the Watchdog ads, and now am accustomed to glancing at them on every page. They almost always match whatever the topic of discussion is, on each particular page.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

For those who were asking, the sponsored links appear if you have the Top Watchdog ads on. I don't think they can be turned off/on independent of the Top Watchdog ads, but you can disable all ads in your preferences.

The Top Watchdog ads are intended to be helpful and relevant. As i recall, they are only visible to subscribers, so by keeping them turned on, you're seeing something more special than the run-of-the-mill ads that non-subs see.

And while it would be nice if subscriptions alone could foot the bill, it's unfortunately a fact of life that websites--much like the numerous gardening magazines I subscribe to--rely on advertisers as well as subscriptions to cover their costs.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Terry.

Kannapolis, NC

Terry, if it helps keep the subscription rates low, I guess that's a very good thing, so we'll try not to complain too much!! ^_^

(Zone 1)

The new "Sponsored Links" at the top of the page doesn't bother me a bit. I kinda like it, hoping it will change to different links every once in awhile. I dislike pop up, flashing ads but the sponsored links are unobtrusive and I'm a sucker for checking out things like that! I've already visited the link for Garden Plants and will check out the others as well!

Tri-Cities, WA(Zone 7b)

I'm afraid the Sponsored Links were very distracting to me, and changing the two line navigation into three was a bit too much. Thanks for the information as to how to turn them off, though it's unfortunate that I had to remove other advertising as well to get my regular navigation back...

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

If you like having the other ads then you might just try living with the sponsor links for a couple days--yesterday I found they were really noticeable because they were new but now after I'm more used to them being there I don't notice them nearly as much.

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

I checked out the 'under banner links' and had to turn them off. I clicked on one and latched onto a lengthy ad promising mouth watering tomatoes over and over, in red and green and bold, page after page. I practically needed a bib and a mop after reading five pages of juicy, sweet, flavorful mention and no end product in sight. I found the extra links minimally intrusive and fully understand they help pay the DG freight.

I'll probably turn them on again, find that article, buy the product and hope for a bountiful harvest :)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

LOL, Pooch, I was on that same website, forever wondering when the price would pop up. Is it the 20 bucks of the 64 dollar tomato?

But in the end, it's like TV, watch it and complain or just turn the darned thing off.

the links are gone now? I still have the ads turned on

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Same here.

I kind of liked them but found that they really distracted me where they were. Just one opinion, lol, but I imagine I would like them better where the navigation links already are. Perhaps a new line in the middle or as the third line. In my imagination, lol again, I think the white links on the dark background are not so distracting.
I don't want to turn off the Watchdog ads so even if they come back as they were I'm keeping them turned on.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

The links are gone adn I may get blaste d for this, but I liek the watchdog ads. Seems somethign ne w always poppign up and alot even I haven't seen before.

I didn't liek the links.

Now I don't knwo how much people us e the links on the side , under the watchdogs ads. I hardley even us e them. I always go up to the top bar for what I looking for.

Maybe if ya need more ad $$'s that extra linking section under watch dog could coem out and another watchdog link put there so ya have two on a page. Just a thought and I ouldn't mind seeign two watch dog ad's.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Dave mentioned in one of the other threads about those links that it was a bug and we weren't supposed be seeing them. Maybe if you have all the ads turned on you would, but I guess they weren't supposed to be seen if all you have checked is the Watchdog ads.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

If the links are gone, I will go back and turn on the top watchdog ads, I liked them, too.

Deb

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Links are gone, yes.
