" I only recently discovered the ammonia/water mix for slugs. I feel like an assassin when I use it. Does it hurt the plants? "

It doesn't seem to, but I'm primarily doing it on Hosta, and even then I'm aiming more to the base of the petioles. Not sure if it would harm less tough plants. I have a whole long thread about this in the hosta forum...my absolute obsession with killing slugs. I go out every night with a spray bottle (sometimes a pump action garden sprayer, a head lamp like a coal miner would wear, and gloves, and I kill, kill, kill everyone I can find. Despite having dispatched hundreds if not thousands by now, they still get eaten, which is disheartening. I'm hoping I am making a difference for next year. I've been using a ration of 20 parts water to one part ammonia(10% strength ammonia). I do feel like a big ol' meanie when I spray them as they're dining, but it's them or my hosta.

My neighbors have seen me in my robe, for sure. I can't imagine what they think I'm doing out there at 10:30 pm with my little light, either.

Thomaston, CT

No slugs yet, but I found a JB in my veggie garden today! I'm always going out in jammies to get the paper & take in garbage cans---I figure people have seen worse at the beach---maybe not Victor, though!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

My jammies are usually loudly mismatched plaid. Thanks for your opinion on the ammonia, Noreaster. I'm gonna keep using it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nothing like having the shiniest, squeaky-clean hosta!

Victor!

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Tip for slug deterrant, sprinkle crushed up egg shell around the base. Slugs won't cross them, you can administer in the daytime and sleep at night.
Any tips for catching a woodchuck? $48.00 trap not working.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

find some melons (watermelon) to use for bait in the trap. and drive miles and miles to let it out - or dispose of as you see fit - those buggers are devastating

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks will try melon.

Thomaston, CT

Do you know anyone with a terrier? Our neighbor's cairn would go right down the burrow after them.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Think Caddyshack.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

the melon definitely works to attract them. You can even use just the rind. The real problem is what to do with the buggers after you catch them. It's illegal in MA to transport a wild animal even if it's a pest animal.

Andrew the intrepid woodchuck hunter has gone down the woodchuck hole as far as he can (shoulders) to try and get them. I'd be afraid for my dog - those critters have some impressive claws!

The swimming pool gets loaded with the JB, turn the pump on, suck em up and then stomp on a big bunch of them all at once. CRUNCH :-)

Now being gyped gipped or what ever: Our local newspaper put out its last paper today and filed chapter 7. Now we dont have local news! I am thinking the internet is the culprit for newspapers, books and other forms of knowledge that is being taken out from under a lot of people. ex: My husband could not get to this site if he was paid big $$

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

ha... Celeste your mosquito situation is so awful... poor you! I was attacked last weekend... I have 8 angry mosquito bites on my legs... they are horrible and will stay for a month! goodness gracious... they are mean... and 2 bites were on my butt! no I was not wearing b-day suit! those horrible creatures! I am a easy target! too much skin exposed... and since I am fat you know... they have too much surface!

I have to say the worse this year maybe not the rain... WEEDS are taking over... and my back hurts today! too much weeding...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - a banner year for bugs and weeds. And allergies!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

July 26th and it's still cold and rainy!!!!!!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

here too and oh the bugs and snails feasting on every leaf and petal in the garden

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

The wet cool weather and slug invasion has definitely taken a toll here too. I must have smushed hundreds of slugs. Iris and some phlox and DLs are looking pretty nasty with brown knees and even the clems got slimed. Hot and humid today after rain again. Weeds grow faster than I can pull them on the few sunny days we have had. It is a bit discouraging but I try to remember that things will change again next year, hopefully for the better. I agree with Victor when it gets hot and humid my time in the garden is much shorter until the cool dry air of fall blows in. Then I complain all winter that spring is taking too long to come. LOL we are never happy I guess but this season has been one of the worst I can remember for quite a while.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

ngam, I have been gardening for 62 years, never, ever was there a summer like this at least not here

Boston, MA

I'm happy I found this thread. We are expecting rain again today and again later in the week. I only have a community garden spot, but the weeds are growing faster than I can pick them out. Like some of you, I'm getting up there in age and it is harder to do garden work. I did not plant any squash this year and I am so happy, everyone in the garden who did is now dealing with mildew on them. Every time my cukes or eggplant start to flower, the rain comes again and knocks them off before they can set any veggies. My little rose bush took a real beating from the rain. My Echies are not liking their feet wet all the time either. My beautiful balloon flowers also took a beating from the rain. The mosquitos are terrible, even in the mid-day at the garden, This week is expected to be hot, humid and wet! Thanks for listening to me vent.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi Ayah, Welcome, that is what this thread is all about complaining about our miserable weather this year

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh my the mosquitoes! If we could figure a way to have the slimer slugs eat them instead of our plants we would be golden. Sun is out right now but it is very oppressive air and the T-storms will probably fire up later on. Most of my roses were naked very early this year. They are just getting back nice foliage and this HHH weather will have them covered again with black spot again no doubt. Yuck! One good thing is not too many Japanese Beetles this year so far at least. The darn slugs probably slimed them too.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they are bad this year - even my m. magnet has not been able to keep up - hate to think what it would be like without it.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Welcome Ayah!

Well, I discovered the worst problem yet from this weather. There is extra moisture (and maybe a little leak) in my basement. One section of drywall has toxic black mold. I have no clue how to get rid of it. I'll probably get the sawzall and cut the bottom foot of the wall out entirely. I don't know how to stop the leak. Ugh. I wish there was a handyman website as terrific as Dave's Garden is.

Harper- DIY network or ehow

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thanks Jen!

Boston, MA

Too bad about the mold, that is a problem for sure. Good luck with a solution.

I have a question about slugs. I always thought they were brown or black. I find little white ones in my back yard, not at the community garden, what are these?
Ayah

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I think the are snails, I have tons of them this year

(Clint) Medina, TN(Zone 7b)

I nominate your slug photo for photo of the year! I hate those things. Wasn't he smart to come from above! Brunnera is such a beautiful plant and insects just love to ruin it for me!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

ayah, are the white ones in the dirt or on top?

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Little whit snails are on the top

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Snails you'd know by the shell.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Greetings from Kentucky! (I'm at a training) where the weather has been wonderful. I was sure I'd melt down here in July but itsbeen low to mid 80s w/o humidity.
Learning nothing related to gardening but, hopefully, how to grow healthier kids.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That's great Dave, a lot nicer than here. Enjoy your time there.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Jen!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

The white beetle slugs are out of the soil and hatching now, is that what it is?

Sounds nice Dave, enjoy. Not so nice up here, HHH.

Boston, MA

They are crawling around at home on the cement slab (for lack of a better word to describe it) under my back porch. They are small and white, but not maggots, I know what they are. LOL!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Healthy kids are a good thing. my son just started a stop smoking program. we hope it works. I am using my organic brick method of slug disposal. Pick them off the pots, plants, etc and smash them with a brick. totally final. They were crawling up the outside of my house to get to the half basket next to the kitchen door and the pansy in it and they made it, too! You know we need an ark if the slugs are searching for higher ground.
