Some of my cabbage plants are dying . At first bottom leaves turn purple , then they get discolored and limp....Is there any way I can fix it ?
Problem with my brassicas (cabbage and broccoli)
I tried 4 broccoli plants this year (only have a small garden) but mine did that too then the very inside leaves curled up and got some kind of little bugs all over them. I will spray with sieven again today.
What are your average daily temps right now? Cabbages are a "cole" crop, preferring cool/cold weather to grow (60-40 degrees). I grew my first two cabbages this past fall, with great success. I had some yellowing leaves for a time, which I attributed to some overwatering. Then, I determined some fertilizer might be needed, so I spread some 14-14-14.
Hope this helps!

No bugs on dying plants. Some other brassicas had some sort of green worms on them , but I sprayed the plants with Hot peppers/garlic/soap/veg.oil mix and that helped a lot...
We had some rains last weeks ...and temperatures were in mid 80s in daytime and 60s in night time . We expect some cooling down this week
So what do you think ... is it a heat or water or under nourishment ? I don't think bugs did any damage here.
Sounds like water. Let em settle down for awhile and are what happens. If they still don't respond, if try a little fert.
I've got a similar problem here with my cabbage, but it definitely ain't heat (most nights just above freezing with the occassional frost), and they are getting a fairly well balanced fertiliser as well. Strangely it's only affecting half my crop!
It still sounds like a water issue to me, but I'm not an expert on this.
Albinus, what's different about the other half of your crop? Where is it located? Do light/sun differ? Soil type same or different?
And, if you tell me they're growing side by side, then I have NO clue!
^_^
They are effectively growing side by side! They are in polystyrene boxes about 4' apart! Same conditions and everything, I'm mystified as well! :)
If all the outliers are the same, then that can only leave one conclusion: Somehow, the stock you started with has differences within the lot, and not all your plants are the same.
Just my take on it. Could STILL be wrong.

Ok...some of my cabbages went back ! And some died....
It was not a bug problem , because I'm watching it closely and if I have little green worms I'm collecting manually visible worms (and putting them on my bird feeder...LOL) and then spraying my plants with hot pepper/water/veg oil/soap spray and it keeps bugs away until the rain.
So IMO my problems were caused by:
1. it was too hot and cabbage doesn't like heat
2. it is a new garden and we applied aged horse manure last week around the plants and they all look better now, so lack of nutrients ?
The green worms love cabbage, brocalli and brussel sprouts I find. I do a "pick and kill" task daily. I have tried to catch and kill the moths (those pretty white looking "butterflys" that fly around them in the sun) that lay the eggs that create them but I suck at that! Picking works for me.
My plants looked like that at first with transplant shock and also if I don't water enough. Mulch and be sure to water from the bottom deeply.

Yeah, the brassicaes are water hogs. I water them till it runs down through the potting mix, every other day.
And don't forget to feed em periodically, too! Also, they like a shot of organic medium to grow in, so if you're just now planting them, add some of your homemade, or storebought, or begged, borrowed, or stolen AGED organics to the planting medium!
That's all I know!

The same thing happened to a couple of my brussels sprout plants this year too. I side dressed with some bone meal (purple brassicas are usually caused by a deficiency on prosphorus) and after copious waterings and a week or two they were back to normal.
