About 4 years ago I planted a small strawberry patch. I followed the directions and waited until the next year for my first crop. All I got was a handful of monkey berries. The same thing happened the following year. Then I got disgusted and in the fall I mowed the plants completely off with the mower. I mowed them off another year also. Now, for some unknown reason, I have strawberries. So far I've picked about 8 qts of berries. My question is what do I do now? The plants are 4 or 5 years old and I don't know if I should continue to mow them off, or should I cover them up with straw in the fall? Aren't the plants kind of old to be producing?
surprize strawberries
See if they are producing runners. If so, you can save the new plants from the runners and mow down the old ones. If not, they're probably exhausted and should be replaced.
