We bought a foreclosed home last July...the back yard was never done, and the front yard was all dried up and looked awful. We've been diligently working to bring the front back to life, and I'm so glad it's worked! We have many of the yellow flowers blooming right now, I think they are daylilies? The white flowers have been blooming for about a month. I'm not sure what the white flowers are - some sort of lily also I think.
The plants must be really hardy as they were almost dead last year, but now they're huge. I think I'll have hubby cut them down later in the year so they'll crop up fresh....at least I think that's what I should do? They are looking really big and overgrown.
I'm totally addicted to growing things now!
Hugs,
Erin
My First Flowers - Daylilies and ?
Yes, the yellows look like daylilies. And the white one looks like Dietes iridoides http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/572/ It's related to irises. With both of them, I think if they're overgrown the best thing to do is divide them vs cutting them back...plus that way you get more of them and you can plant them in other parts of the yard that need some filling in. Here's an article that tells you how to divide daylilies but the technique should be similar for the Dietes. http://www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/faqs/DaylilyDivided.html
Thank you ecrane3! That is exactly it - and I really appreciate the info on dividing them.
