I know this really isn't a gardening question, but I figured it was close enough. My OH thinks that if a dog or cat eats a slug it will make them extremely sick. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I don't know about the slugs generally, but there are some types of slug/snail bait (ones with metaldehyde as the active) that are extremely toxic to pets, so if they eat a slug that has eaten that type of bait then they could definitely have serious problems.

Agreed. Probably not the slug, but the bait involved. Much like poisoning a rat. Here is some interesting info. on slug bait:
