Is it important to heed lunar planting rules?

According to what I've seen about lunar planting rules it is considered very advantageous to plant in accord with the moon's gravitational field. I'm sure there must be something to this but in actuality have people really seen different results by scrupulously following these suggestions?

Some people swear by it. There is even a 'gardening by the moon' forum on here.
