pest control

i have a planter garden i have built in the balcony of my apt. anyway i just transplanted some beet, carrot, watermelon and lettuce seedlings the other day. i woke up yesterday and checked on them. it looked like something had dug them up but i wasnt sure. tyoday i woke up and something definately dug them up. being on a balcony i can only think of teo things, a bird or a squirrel. i actually know there is a black squirrel back there so im leaning towards it being the culprit. what can i do to protect the seedlings???

Our small dog has taken on the protection of our garden from maraurding squirrels! There is probably some kind of netting that you could purchase. If this only happens at night, then I doubt it's either squirrels or birds - depening upon how early you get up to check on the damage. If you have another planter the same size as the one in which you have your seedlings, you might want to try turning it up-side-down over the other pot - this might discourage your critter until you get up in the morning to remove it.

i just bought hot pepper wax and garlic oil and sprayed it on hopefully that will work. Got into a big fight with my girlfriend when she saw me break out the rat traps so i hope the sprays work or i may be a single guy with a nice squirrel free garden

Buddy I feel for you. My EX said rat traps were un humane, Decon was OK for rats tough. Rat trap instant, Decon takes days. I'll never understand that lojic? Anywho live traps are fun. Catch said critter, watch it for a few minutes, and take it across town to a local park. Open the cage run like Hell and remember the squirrl in Christmass Vacation. You have just improved the gene pool in the park, had a good laugh, and cured your problem. Take your gal and a picnic lunch. HAPPY HUNTING!
