Sunflowers

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Does anyone know how long it takes for a sunflower to flower from seed? How long after it flowers will seeds be ready? I had two really cute stray dogs in my yard. They were starving so I decided to feed them.(I think everything that comes to my yard is starving- birds, squirrels, cats, dogs, hummingbirds. I know the raccoons and possums aren't, they seem to find all the leftovers). The dogs were so adorable, until they trampled my garden and destroyed my sunflowers. I guess they didn't understand the "rules" in my yard. I'll feed anything, as long as they stay out of my gardens. Anyway, I'm thinking about starting over, but I'm not sure if they will flower and seed before our usual first frost in October.

Sorry to bump so soon........if I still have a chance for sunflowers, I want to go ahead and get them going.

There are many different varieties of sunflowers that grow to different heights have different colors, some that produce seed and some that do not some are double. I have seen dwarf varieties that flower in 45 days. Just depends what you plan on using the flowers for, seed for birds, cut flowers or just to have in the garden.

I'd go ahead and try--you really have nothing to lose except a few dollars for the seed packet

thanks ecrane3, I think I just needed someone to tell me to go for it anyway. Hopefully, I'll get something before the first frost. I would like to know in advance though how much I can hope for.
