Morning Glories 2009 #04

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Beautiful flowers Colin and Dany.

Love the Rebecca Eliz

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Great variegated leaf Joseph!!

This is pretty Eliz http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6747692 no matter what name it goes by!

Colin this http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6748317 is really nice!

Dany I love the points!!

Probably at least a month before I see any flowers on mine...o):

Here is Bluespiral's margined grey JMG. It is a stunning flower, however, after tons of these flowers, there is not one formed seed pod. I still have faith one or two may develop before the end of the season.

Here is an unknown CV growout that is similar to Blue Silk. It just gets better with time.

Here is another unknown CV growout, that knocks my socks off each time I see it. I got a decent photo of it this morning. Big perfect flowers, deep dense blue with pale tube.

Here is another photo of Xiong's Purple Red Ipomoea purpurea.

Lastly, Emma's Velvet Plum. This one is quite nice, makes much larger flowers when grown outdoors than when grown indoors.

Colin - Your blooms are stunning! WOW! Love that dark purple one!

Dany - I like your Black King MG. It does look similiar to Colin's bloom! So pretty! The points on the one bloom are really amazing! You definitely have to use the pollen of that one to cross with other bloom cultivars! What a great opportunity with these beautiful blooms/vines!!!

Eliz - What a pretty Rebecca bloom! Love it! :-)

Joseph - Are you hand-pollinating the grey MG? It can be so frustrating when some vines just don't produce seeds. I can't stand it when that happens and wind up hand-pollinating the blooms with pollen from other choice cultivars! I hate to waster a perfectly good bloom! LOL!

And the unknown CV is really gorgeous! How beautiful the colors and patterns! I hope you get seeds from that one! I want to do a trade with you for some of those seeds! ;-)

oooh! I love those Velvet Plum blooms! NICE!!!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I luv this one! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6751685

I should try hand pollinating the flowers of the grey margined JMG. It is worth a shot. It seems to have quite a bit of pollen from looking at the photo. Thanks, Ronnie and Becky...let's hope the other vines are more into being fruitful and multiplying LOL.

(Zone 7a)

Joseph - with regard to the emargined grey - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6751666 , the absolute dearth of formed seed pods for you must be trying to tell us something, because the parent vine was just covered in formed pods well before frost (unlike most other MG vines that year).

I wonder what it's trying to say? Might it be saying *You can't fool mother nature* by starting me in the winter, as opposed to in the spring? lol I don't know what it's trying to say, really, but it does make me wonder if these vines might prefer to come into bloom later in the year's cycle, when days are shorter and each day has fewer minutes than the preceding day.

I'm sure there's an explanatiton somewhere - anyone else want to offer a guess/opinion/answer?

-------------------------------------
Becky, I took your advice and started mg seeds, even though it's so late - I went absolutely berserk - there must be zillions of seedlings - have thrown all sensibility to the winds and I'm feeling as chortlesome about this as I bet Patootie is about hers. My crystal ball tells me that a lot of real estate inside our tiny home will be under shower curtains this fall once I bring many (hopefully) of these beauties in to ripen pods (hopefully).

So, evr, thank you for sharing pics of your cotyledons and Luvs for gently grousing about waiting for yours to bloom, too - I appreciate the company while I wait for mine to bloom; and Colin and Dany, thank you for posting those gorgeous pics to drool over while I coddle my seedlings along...y'all may remember how I feel about smoky, dark lavenders ever since one of those appeared accidentally via Emma's gift in 2007.

Patootie, you must be having the summer that has passed us by - so far. Hope temps become more reasonable where you are.

Joseph, More lovely blooms. I wonder if your gorgeous blue unknown might be
Akatsuki no Umi. Love the purpurea from Xiong's, a real beauty.
Karen, I'm so glad you finally got to start your mg's. I'm still starting sds too.
Our temps should be back in the lower 90's this week, a bit more normal
for this time of yr.

Joseph such wonderful blooms.. I love the dark blue one.. Mine are just now starting to bloom, with jaime lynn, Liz unknown purple lavender, grandpa ott, and a nice candy pink leading the ay..like pattotie, I went crazy planting seeds, and even planted some more last night..
planted some from Karen, Liz, Ronnie, Becky, a floridian dgr who sent me some natives, some of emmas. some of the wild ones I have collected so far.. DD just got back home from texas, she has beach glory starts and some other vines her DAD fixed for me.. I am so stoked about the garden I can't stand to go to work, do housework, or even talk on the phone.. I am hopelessly addicted..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Debra, you've got it as bad any anyone I've ever seen.

Here's my pandurata's 1st bloom this am. Almost missed it
blooming toward the back side of my fence. Also going to start
a new thread just to make it easier to find. I love this vine.

Here's a new one for me, Beach of Milky Way JMG. It was the last seed in the commercial packet, and had several near death experiences, but it hung in there and has grown out into a very nice plant. I recommend this one for you purple flower lovers.

I bought this one on eBay, marketed as Hot Pink and it is a purpurea that lives up to its name!

Thumbnail by

Here's another view of the flower...it's not as deep and intense a pink as the pink Scarlett O'Hara but still one worth growing I think.

Thumbnail by

Here is another photo of the Blue Silk look alike. Quite elegant in the early morning light.

Thumbnail by

Jackie, I think you are right about this one being Akatsuki no Umi. It is such a deep velvety blue flower. The flower looks just as this photo shows it...one for blue flower lovers for certain!

Thumbnail by

I think I am getting hooked on these Ipomoea purpurea strains. This one is Xiong's Purple Blue small (name that was on the packet).

Joseph, I love that hot pink and have some blooming as well.. that dark blue you posted is awsome.. I posted a pic of my obscura on another thread..moofiepoo sent me some little bells and it is vining nicely..in fact, I am having a hard time keeping up with all the vines, but here is a picture from luvs ( ronnie) of one that opened...

Dany, what is that flower on the bottom row on the right in your post here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6757593 ? It looks like a bell - very pretty

Am enjoying all the pics here

Karen,
Ipomoea Batatas - Blackie .
The yellow and the brown Batatas don't make any flowers, Blackie produce seeds .

Dany

Dany, I could email the pic to you so you could compare flowers? I only call it Xiong's because that was the trader's name.

Here's another Akatsuki no Mai, classic flower form for that strain.

Here's another picture of the unknown with bright colored variegation in heart shaped leaves.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I missed the bloom on my I. Plantesis..DD took this shot for me ( after it wilted) *sniff* can't anyone take a dang picture before 2pm when I am at work? LOL Guess I should be grateful..

We'll all be looking forward to your platensis blooms Debra.

The Rabenda x Pres Bush is a great bloomer. Others started at the same time
are just thinking about blooming but nowhere close

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - The Rabenda x President Bush was a first bloomer for me, too! And it continued to put on a show for quite some time rivaling all the other vines! Yours is beautiful!!! Glad to see it came true to the parent vine! :-)

(Zone 7a)

Dany, thanks for the ID on I. batatas 'Blackie', and thank you to Debra for offering me a plant, too - y'all are beyond generous.

I have some sprouts, some of which are beginning to grow their first true leaf. If they were horses at the gate of a race, the first one out when the shot went off to start would be President Bush - lol! (not making a political comment...whatever name Emma might have given this one, it's a great plant)

Thanks Becky. I'm glad this one came back true. Hope I gather lots of seeds
to share. I plan on growing this one every yr, a great performer.

Karen, I agree,Pres Bush is a wonderful mg. I really enjoyed mine last yr
and it should be my next vine to bloom.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

mine is up too, in fact I have more sprouts than I can count atm.. some have bloomed, I keep missing them.. at least I get to see what they look like here.. thanks, I need this.
Debra

Joseph i love this one:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6756457
the Blue silk i grew from your seeds has been one of my favourites so far... how does the one in the pic compare to real Blue silk?

Dany... love this pic: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6757593
did you grow any of those named I purpureas? i have and they seem to be the same as others i have seen such as Milky Way etc.....

Jackie.. the rabanda x president bush... is such a lovely shade... i have one in bud now the others i sowed at the same time are showing no sign of flower buds!!

Colin, I will be able to compare the two vines once the known Blue Silk flowers up. Stay tuned!

Every day or two I see a new strain flower up. Here is what I have to share today.

This one is the classic Beach of Milky Way. Love the purple blizzard pattern.

Now look at this one, it is on the same plant as the one just shown!
