My tree has been planted for about 5 - 6 years. About two years ago, I noticed a 2 - 3 inch strip of bark gone about two feet up from the tree's base. So, I coated the area with pruning paint spray because I noticed that there were other "breaks" in the bark.
This year, there is a 6 inch bare area completely around the the tree trunk. The tree is in leaf again and blossoms ready to open, so it seems the general health, apart from the missing bark, is fine.
Is this normal for this type of tree? If not, is there something I should be doing with it? I haven't sprayed with the pruning paint spray yet -- waiting to hear other options first :-D
I live in Newfoundland, Canada. The tree was purchased here from a gardening centre, not purchased outside Canada. The gardening centre was a seasonal grocery store centre whose staff couldn't help.
Thanks!
Japanese Ivory Silk Lilac tree bark peeling off...help?
Can you post some pics of the peeling bark? That might help figure out what might be causing the problem. I would also stay away from the pruning paint--I think most of the time it's not recommended that you use that, better to let the tree heal on its own.
I have the same problem. My tree was planted 3 years ago. Last year it was full of beautiful cream-colored flowers. This year the flowers were small and few. Some of the leaves are culed up and one side of the trunk looks very bad. I was under the impression that these trees have very few problems. I'm sending you a picture of the trunk.
Thank you!
