Tomato and squash questions

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

My DH has planted a garden for the first time this year and our tomatoes are going gangbusters. However though we have several different varieties the skin seems to be tough on all of them. Does anyone know what could cause this?

Our yellow squash has lots of blooms and looks really healthy but I don't see any fruit forming on any of them. Should I be worried?

Uh oh. I read there are male and female blossoms. How do I tell the difference? Do they have to be on different plants?

Female Squash have a small squash growing at the base of the flower (or sometimes looks like a bulging stem). Male squash flowers are just straight with no fruit.

Each plant contains both male and female flowers.

Thanks. I have to go out and check my plants a little more carefully. I must have just checked out a few males. :0)

Bobryd,
What tomato varieties are you growing? It could be that all your varieties were meant to have those tough skins.

I don't like tough skins. First time I grew tomatoes was in 2007. I grew beautiful indeterminate heirloom beefsteaks, and discovered varieties among them that had thinner skins, which are my favorites. I'm asking over in the tomato forum which have the tough skins and which have the thinner skins, so I'll know what NOT to plant next time.

Thanks, I popped over there and posted a question with the variety of tomatoes we planted.
