Weird Weather of '09 #12

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

We had heavy rain and t-storms for about an hour and a half. Nice. No watering tonight!! I can take a night off and just relax. Well maybe..laundry to fold..chores to do.

(Judi)Portland, OR

No watering for me today either. It has been cloudy and very cool so even the vegetables are ok without watering. I enjoy these rainy stormy days once in a while. Hot sun every single day is just too much! Good sleeping weather tonight!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We had thunder storms last night and finally get a decent rain on a bike ride day....cut it short, only did 18 miles and it poured the entire time....told DH he owes me for this one! Guess I should be thankful we weren't doing the Seattle to Portland ride this weekend....can't imagine it was much fun, but then that is not my idea of fun on a good day.

Came home and crawled under my lap robe (the purring, meowing one) and watched baseball and bike races then made a big pot of Chicken soup. Summer can come back now.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Set out some beer traps for the slugs this afternoon. They were just thick in one part of the back yard. The frogs are not wandering far enough for food!! Picked what I could find..gross.. The rain took care of the beer. I just checked them and they were working , a slug was inside the little tray, but the beer has washed away. Time to go and refill them now that the rain has stopped.

Hope it works as I can not use sluggt in the back because of the frogs.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

My MIL had a dish in her raspberries....talk about gross...it was a metal dog dish completely full of slugs.....she even has to be careful about putting this out as her dogs like to drink the beer.........

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I used recycled starbucks cups..cut off all the cup but 1 inch or so and use the bottom of the cut ,fill and throw away when finished. It is a gruesome task.

Eugene, OR

At least you don't have to clean it out. Yuk! Still overcast here, but just a few sprinkles. Everythings smells good outside.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I like your idea better....just throw out the whole thing....I Hate Slugs......

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Please send all of that rain this direction! We have only had a brief shower.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

big splatty drops here - chased me in & when I went back out to weedeat, it returned. I call it the Waiting Game. Be sure to pick a task you hate, and it will be sunny. But pick a task that requires dry - it will rain.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Tasks that guarantee rain....

before hand....mowing

afterwards: slug baiting, rounding up, spraying the roses.............

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

lol! you got it right!

Eugene, OR

And cool weather when you don't have time and as soon as you do it gets hot! LOL

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Nothing like a PNW gardener trying to make up for several days worth of time missed in the garden on one 85+ degree day...............lordy do I not do hot well! Who was it that said that we don't "complain", but are just overly observant of the weather?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I'm with you, Julie, I don't do hot, humid weather very well. My Oregon kids left yesterday. I am sooo missing them already. My little 7 yr old DGD bawled her eyes out when she kissed my mom good-bye. We didn't have to turn on the AC once while they were here. Tomorrow the humidity increases, so it will go on to keep it dry in the house for mom.

(Judi)Portland, OR

So move to the PNW Jan! Bring your Mom! You already have so many friends here in the PNW!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

AWWW, that's so sweet, Judi. How thoughtful. Maybe someday.

Eugene, OR

Sounds like a good idea to me too, Jan.

I don't do heat well either and it was hot today! DH and I had gone on a bus trip with the senior center, the bus broke down in the toolies and we had to wait 2 hours before they could get another bus. It turned out to be an older bus that was used for the kids. No a/c, little hard seats, etc. Thankfully most people took it as an adventure and a lovely woman who lived nearby not only offered her bathroom, but ferried people up her very steep hill!! How's that for OR hospitality!! We went on in the old bus (top windows down) had a lovely lunch near Foster Lake and stopped to shop in Brownesville. I passed on that, too hot. Called mom to give her a laugh, this makes the third time in a week I've been involved in vehicle trouble! She asked if there was a black cloud that was following me (in between giggles).

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sally, maybe you need to stay out of 'vehicles' for a few days. :) Glad it turned into an adventure!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Sally what a funny story! An adventure indeed!

Eugene, OR

What was really funny was watching how 24 different people handled the situation. Some of them surprised me. Other than missing part of our trip, it really wasn't that bad. But some of them decided they would NEVER take another trip with this group. Vehicles do break down (just ask me, I know. LOL) and I figure it's their loss if that's what they decide. The driver found a spot where we could pull off the road so we were in a safe spot, some of us had cell phone reception so we could call for assistance. We had the lovely lady up the hill, forgot to say she also brought a big box of cold water bottles. I got a lot of knitting done in between checking out the area and visiting. It could have been a lot worse.

Ok.... I can't believe that no one is mentioning the hot weather on the weather thread! lol. My thermometer had 103 at about 3:45 this afternoon.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We were at 80 at ten this morning! Got to 98* here today...too hot to do anything inside or outside...the fans are working over time...don't think the one in my bedroom has been turned off all week! Even the lilies were not happy today.

Maybe no one could move. If I wasn't babysitting I'd be asleep. I'm completely sticky/wet and miserable. Google weather says its 96 degrees now when the high was supposed to only get to 94. I’m going to hate this week.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It was hot early. It seemed like it had just gotten cool enough to sleep when I closed the windows because it was warmer outside. I hate sleeping when it's hot; though if it gets hot enough I will go comatose, but that's a different issue.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree that it's too hot.

Hopefully you both are able to cool off some in the evenings.

Unfortunately all of the plants that I just planted in the last 2-4 weeks, have been burning if I don't get out in the middle of the day (on the hottest days) to give them an extra dose of water. As well as some areas of the sprinkler system still have some quirks and so plants in those areas aren't getting anywater. So, I was out from about 1:30-6:30 moving sprinklers around and hand watering. I knew that this day would come, but I was never looking forward to it. lol

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I wish I had a swimming pool!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

That is the ONLY thing I have accomplished today Shelly, watering and re-watering things. I, for once, am glad I didn't get the weeding done in the back beds...the shade from the weeds has helped keep things from drying out so fast. The perfect weed free beds in front I have been watering a couple of times a day...

I open the doors and windows once the sun goes down....close them up before I go to bed, make sure all the shades are down and it keeps it tolerable for a good part of the day... I prefer highs in the 75-85 range....

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Laura we have the wading pool like your neighbors if you want it......we aren't using it here.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I want to be able to float on my back. In my opinion the tub works just as well, better since you can take your clothes off, as those little kiddy ponds, but Sage might like the "pool" if you wanted to bring it over. Now I could see maybe sitting in your pond, I could probably get up to my shoulders in there, but I figure you wouldn't like that much.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Your Dad has your GM's car right now....but I will get the pool over for Sage and Orion to have to at least get wet in over the next few days....may be tomorrow....

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I shouldn't have Orion again for at least a week, but I'm sure Sage will appreciate it.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I spent an hour in the kiddie pool with my doggie girls. We all fit as long as we all agree to stand.
It works well, hmmm, for about 20 minutes!
Right now (8:17) inside my house it is 98°, outside it's - oh joy, 95°. Guess I'd better go outside to cool off!!!
I think the beans grew another 3" today...

Eugene, OR

Saw lots of kids in pools and people in the river today. Over 100 here too, my garden is pretty much toast as far as flowers. Don't know how many times the hydrangeas can be revived! LOL The daisys gave up, so did some of the glads. Just keep watering as much as I can, has to be early, I can't take this kind of heat. Had to take some stuff to our friend in the nursing home today.....dash in, dash out. All I could manage today. We have a pool at the clubhouse, but it's covered and no a/c. Have to go there early too!

Forecast says it will start to cool down Thursday, if you can say 90 is cooling down. LOL

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, sitting here with two fans moving the hot air around...might as well be in the pool as drippy as I am right now.....trying to get some of the DGer's back East to send us a little bit of their rain and cooler weather....not all of it, just enoujg to moderate this heat a bit.

Did tell Bill that I DO NOT see a bike ride in our future as long as it is this hot.....not even on the bike path.

Eugene, OR

Good for you, some men have no sense when it comes to heat! Mine included. LOL Although he did go out and water for me tonight. I was taking care of people all day and I was beat.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I have to give him credit, he took my mom's car with A/C to go teach his class tonight instead of riding the bike.....hasn't moved from in front of the fan since he came home !

Eugene, OR

Well, then there is common sense in there somewhere. LOL We've cooled down all the way to 91!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Yep, at the rate the temp is dropping it is going to be a long, warm night :(

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yep, I agree with that statement!

Katie... the kiddie pool sounds great, even if it is for only 20 min.

Sally... sounds as if you may need a soaker hose that's on a timer. If I had any more available faucets on the house to use, I would set up at least 4 more soaker hoses on timers set to go off for about an hour at the height of the heat of the day! That would be sooooo much easier!!! lol.
