crape myrtles

Deland, FL(Zone 9a)

My neighbors crape myrtles bloomed nicely three years ago when planted. Grow fine now-but no blooms. Were trimmed back about 3 feet in Feb. Fertilized with 16-4-8 once in march. Any ideas??

I'd give them a little time yet, some varieties start to bloom a little later in the year, and if they were trimmed in Feb they make take some time to grow before they bloom. Also the high nitrogen fertilizer they were given will tend to make the plant focus on green growth but not blooms. And I don't know if you're in one of the many areas of the country that has just been soaked in rain lately, but all that rain & cloudy weather could slow down their blooming too--they like sun & heat. But all that aside, it wouldn't hurt to take a look at whether they're in an area that gets enough sun--they do best in full sun, and the more shade you have the less blooms they will give you. I had one at my old house that the previous owners had planted in a fairly shady courtyard (dappled morning sun only) and it didn't bloom very well at all.

E- thats what I thought, too much nitro. Yes, we got a tremendous amount of rain a few weeks ago. WE got 6 months worth in about 6 days.
Perhaps I should try so super phousphate? I've got some 10-55-10, or maybe some bone meal? I have noticed that others in the heighborhood that I know for a fact haven't done anything to their plants are blooming nicely.

Since it may have already had a bit too much nitrogen, if you're going to add something with phosphorus I'd try to find something that doesn't come with more nitrogen.

10-4, I'll try and find some sort of super P and experiment with one plant---maybe an application once a week for two weeks, and see what happens. If it works, I'll do the rest .
