Is this Melon Ready?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

This is the first melon to show up, and I've been rather impatiently waiting for it to be ready to harvest. It doesn't have a nice yellow spot on its underbelly, but I noticed tonight that the tendrils near it have died and turned brown. Is it ready?

Maybe, but in the photo it still looks frosty. I think I would wait a few days to see if the filmy look dissipates. It is a green melon so it should also turn yellowish where it sits on the ground.

Well, darn!! I'll wait a few more days then.

Isn't Farmerdill a big help.

I grow all types of melons some more sucessfully then others. With the watermelons I always wait until the underside is yellow (like farmerdill wrote) and the stem starts to dry out. Now I have to see if that same method works for other melons also.

Thank you for your input, Lisa. I will be dilligently watching and waiting for all the signs to show ready. Maybe we'll be able to eat it by or on 4th of July. That would be sweet!

I hope you get to eat it for the 4th. I have never had one ripen that early no matter how hard I try. I do have a couple Asian melons that I may have ready for the 4th, does that count?
