how and when do I prune lavender flowers?
lavender
Hi ,
I live in Spain where lavender is a native plant. The best time to prune here is in winter, when I cut it back very severely then it flourishes and grows with renewed vigour in spring/ summer. But maybe as you are zone 7a it would be best to prune it hard when there is no further risk of frost in your area. Don't forget they grow best without any water in summer. Lavender grows wild in mountain areas near the Mediterranean sea where there is virtually no rainfall in summer. Hope this helps..
Saludos
I generally prune it back right after it blooms--the timing varies depending on the particular species of lavender. My L. stoechas was just coming to the end of its first round of blooming so I pruned them a few weeks ago, but my L. angustifolia is just starting to bloom now so it'll get pruned in a month or two when the blooms are fading. Just make sure not to cut back too far, if you get into the woody area at the bottom of the plant it won't come back from that.
