Help With Germinating Eggplant Seed

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

3 tries and still, nothing. I cant seem to get eggplant to germinate for me. is there a trick to it? a step i am missing other than planting and keeping moist? everything else i have planted has germinated almost 100%, but this eggplant seems to not like me at all. Any advice would be appreciated!

Gymgirl, no worries.. this economy has everyone on a tighter than tight budget, believe me, I know. I too have to scrounge for $ just for postage. So, take all the time you need, Im in no hurry, nor should you be :)

Eggplant like bottom heat. After you sow then cover them with no more soil than the thickness of the seed or use a toothpick and push the seed in about 1/8" deep. When you water use warm water. When you water with cold water that drops the soil temp and it takes a long time for the soil to warm up. I put my flats in a plastic bag after sowing and watering in. I do not have to water again until after germination when I remove the plastic. Just don't put the flat in the sun with a plastic covering or you will cook the seed. I have found that putting the seeding container on top of the refrigerator gives them just enough bottom heat. None of this works if your seed is not viable.

It may be a little late in your area for eggplants. I started mine in Jan. I had trouble at first too. I start them like peppers. I surface sow them (don't cover them at all with soil), I use a heat mat, and keep them covered with plastic or a dome. Then can take a long time to germinate so don't give up. You may want to soak the seeds in water and peroxide) over night that can speed up germination. I have had some germinate in a couple days and some take a month. I have no idea what the difference was.
Good Luck,
