Getting rid of wild grapevines in garden

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I have these growing everywhere! Usually I just cut back what I can and ignore them, but they are going wild. I don't mind them at all on fences, etc, but there are some areas where I want them disappeared! Suggestions?

I've ripped up miles of them but it seems impossible to get every last inch, and then they grow back. Is it even possible to have them one place and not have them every other place as well?

I have even considered making an arch for them to climb, just so I can keep an eye on them. The birds like the grapes I believe.

Oh, I can't remember if what I have are actually wild grapes or something else wild, vine and weedy; I'm afraid it's the latter.

Cut the vine and then "paint' the cut with something like Brush Be Gone - don't just spray it. Any kind of woody plant killer should work. It will target just the plant you have cut and painted. I do this on poison ivy vines and also sumac. It works.

Thanks! Would that kill back down the vine toward the root -- often I can only get at the top couple of feet and there are another few feet underneath the geraniums or intertwined with other stuff.

It should if you are using the type of product that is specifically for woody plants/vines. I will sometimes spray it into a cup, or directly onto a sponge paint brush, and apply right to the cut that leads to the root. If the plant has or forms aerial roots, it wouldn't hurt to paint the other cut, either. Most of the products that say it kills down to the root will work, but it's important not to get it on anything you'd like to keep - therefore, painting it on eliminates the problem.

Would Roundup work? I have some of this already. (Guess I could read the label!)

Maybe? But I think Round Up is more for non-woody plants.

I use Roundup straight for painting "hard to get rid of "plants.
