Watermelons, Baby!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We now have 6 Sugar Baby watermelons on the vine. We planted 2 plants (transplants) in mid-April. We soon got a melon and it's ripening and should be ready to pick soon. With the wacky weather we had this spring, not much happened other than the one melon. Then, the heat showed up and the melons have really taken off. We had 3 melons pollinate in about 2 days and then 1 each day for the next couple of days. How exciting!

Here's melon baby #1. I'll post a pic of the 3 that are close together next.

Here are the 3 together that pollinated on the same day.

I have a question, though. These seemed to plump up and turn the dark green within a few days, much faster than #1 ever did. The other 2 that have pollinated seem to be taking their time getting nice and fat and turning dark. Should I be concerned about them?

Here's one of the other 2 that don't seem to be developing as quickly as the "3 peas in a pod" above.

Congratulations! It's a boy and a girl and...

They look really good, Steph. I wouldn't be too concerned. I think if too many are growing from the same main vine area the plant may abort some fruit to put energy into the strongest fruits. I planted my Sugar Babies from seed about 5 weeks ago and they are taking over the garden. From what I can tell amongst the tangle of vines I have at least 5 growing nicely and a couple not so good, kinda like your little guy...

Those triplets look to be pretty far along to abort now.

You have a livestock and rodeo that I will go to someday... Its a dream of mine, and someday I will make it come true.... So I figure what better way to find it, then practice and take a road trip for melon...

Okay, but I'm not guaranteeing you these watermelons will still be here. Come dressed for cold weather. We usually get ice during rodeo time.

Here's today's pic of the watermelons. I noticed that the smallest one down the vine a bit is shriveling up and dying. :( But I still have these 3 and one more on the other side of the bed.
