Grass alternative in zone 5-6

Aurora, CO

I have been reading about blue star creeper being used as ground cover on the stepables website. I live in Aurora, CO and my back yard is all thistle. I have cleared out the thistle and I am looking for a grass alternative since the 2 large dogs I have kill it. I was thinking of planting blue star creeper over my entire back yard. Is this possible? Are there drawbacks? Will it stand up to my dogs doing their business out there and running on it? I need your advice on this. Is there a better non-grass ground cover to use? I want to stay away from sod and grass. I have attached a photo of my yard right now. It is fairly large and gets lots of sun all day.

If grass won't stand up to the dogs I'd be surprised if any other groundcover would be much better. Usually grass is the toughest one, and even the "high traffic" type of groundcovers aren't quite as good at standing up to traffic. If you want to give it a try though, I'd try it in a small area first before you invest in enough to cover your yard (non-grass groundcovers also tend to be more expensive than grass, so it's a good idea to make sure it works before you spend a ton of money)

You can try Ajuga but it wouldn't last with my GSD.
