How to best label plants in the garden

Reedsburg, WI(Zone 4b)

Now that I am getting more and more perennials, I am wanting to get them labeled since I know I will forget what things are over the time.

What are some tried and trued methods you have used that will hold up over the test of time?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

I use Eon garden markers, and stick on labels that I print on a Brother label printer (I believe it's TZ label tape that is extra durable and laminated to hold up outdoors). So far so good, they're holding up better than other things I've tried in the past. If you want a cheaper approach, you can cut up mini blinds to make tags and write on them either in pencil or buy one of the special magic markers that's meant for garden use (regular Sharpies will fade in sunlight)

plastic knives from takeout with a garden marker works well too. If you're artistic, draw your garden! .. like they do in the magazines. (and then label your grid)

Old mini blinds are good too....just cut to lgt. and use a sharpie pen that won't wash off...

I have best luck with skething out the garden area then labling what I planted where. Graph paper works well for this. I keep the drawings in a three ring binder. I use pencil so I can alter at will. If I move something or if something dies. I also have note sheets under each drawing that remind me what I've tried and what did or did not do well in any particular area. Any lables I have used in the ground have either faded or gotten gone. Seems birds and critters(especialy squirrels) believe every thing I leave out in a bed is fair game to play with or flat out swipe. I have found various markers all over the yard and several on the roof. Just don't recall planting any thing up there. Hmmm. I am getting a little older may be I did put fox glove up there last spring. Would explain why the gutters did not drain well?

What is this "garden marker" I have had a normal sharpie fade on me. Can anyone post a link to the garden marker?

"Paint pens" work very well and don't fade. They're available at craft stores and some paint stores. Choose one with a medium tip.

Oh, I think my hubby bought one of those recently! (He has a Shelby Truck and you can send in a piece of the car for Carol Shelby to autograph) I can swipe his!!
