Hudson, FL

I have this plant/weed in my yard and it is taking over everything! I don't know what it is, and I really need your help figuring it out. I think it might be in the Jade family. It isnt portalaca ( hope thats spelled right) as I have hunted all over the web and it looks nothing like it. Please helpme find out what it is and how to control it! Thanks!!!

If you can confirm it's purslane it's also edible. Though obviously don't go munching without confirmation...disclaimer :)

It definately Purslane. I've spent many hours, when I was a kid, hoeing it out of the low places in the cotton. We called it water pursley. Here in Louisiana, where I live, all you have to do is keep the ground wet and it will come up. It makes a beautiful flower. I have trouble having it around me, brings back to many memories of the cotton patch.

It can be pretty, but not where it's not supposed to be. Try to get it all out, (Jim is right - wet the ground first), and make sure you throw it away. Don't use in compost piles and don't throw it on the ground. They can root and regrow anywhere in hot climates.

That thing will develop roots that go to China! Very invasive here. I couldn't get rid of it (after admiring its flowers and deciding to let it live - after which it decided to live it up!) I dug, and dug, but any little root will grow a new plant, and since the roots go so deep, it's impossible to get them all. I ended up solarizing that area to kill them, and now I dig at the first little sign of one of those coming up anywhere.

Thank you all very much. I will remember to take precautions so as not to spread it further. I have a big battle ahead of me to rid the yard of it. Thanks again!
