I came home from vacation and found one of the limbs on my nectarine tree had split in a storm. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Right now, I just pulled it back together and proped it up.
Broken limb on nectarine tree
Can you post a picture? From the description I suspect the best thing to do will be to finish cutting off the branch and then let the tree heal on its own.
With a grafted tree I'm wondering if it would be good to root the branch while it's still on the tree. You wrap some wet moss thru and around the cut area, tie the limb back up in place, tie a baggy around the whole area (above cut and below cut) and keep it wet for a couple of months. Maybe by the end of fall you will have a rooted branch. Works 3 out of 5 times for me.
Is the branch still on the tree? I have a Navel Orange tree that I'm going to try it on. I'll do some research.
I think if the break is right at the crook of the branch, right where it meets the trunk, and it compromises the trunk, I would not do the graft. It might disease the trunk .
If you keep it tied up to itself to heal, it might have a better chance if you trim the branch shorter. Less chance of it moving around. And a touch of crazy glue on the outer bark helps.
