What's This Growing At My Pond???

Jackson, TN(Zone 7b)

My friend told me yesterday that this is a Weeping Willow Tree growing at the edge of my pond. I didn't plant this...it just came up this year. Is it a weeping willow? If it is...can I move it now or do I need to wait until fall? If it's not weeping willow...do you have any idea what it is?

I'm in Zone 7. The high today is supposed to be in the 90's...and yes...the humidity has set in.

Thanks in advance

you might want to post the picture on the id forum if you don't get results here. if it is a willow and you want to save it, then i would say wait until fall. if you just want rid of it, pull it now while the roots are young.

If it is a willow...I'd love to save it...but I'd want to move it way back in the yard.

there are a lot of weeds that look like your plant so i would get a positive id first. willows love water so it is quite possible that a stray seed found its way to your place.

Weeds do tend to be what I'm best at growing.

Kind of reminds me of the black willows I had at my old house. They sprout up EVERYWHERE. Almost as bad as my cattails! I kept them trimmed up away from the ground and they provided shade over my pond, but it was a constant job of trimming. They are fast growers. Some washed down about 100 yards away into a drainage ditch.

you should move to florida then. you'll never run out of weeds here-that's for sure! lol

Julie...My pond is too close to the house to leave it where it is. I've always heard that Weeping Willow roots run to water ( and ruin water pipes ). If it is a willow...I will need to move it farther back in the yard. If it is just a weed...I'm going to leave it where it is...just because I kinda like how it looks. What's that saying...A weed is just a plant that came up somewhere that you didn't want it...or something like that.

Trackinsand...seems that I don't have any trouble at all growing plenty of weeds here in Tennessee!

lol, yes they do run to pipes and will ruin septic and water pipes-much like our ficus trees in florida. years ago so many people planted ficus "hedges" around their homes, now i see places that had to have earthmovers come in and remove the trees and have all new plumbing put in.

i cringe when i see new homeowners planting certain things so close to their homes. i've seen palms go right through overhangs.

For now...I'm going to keep it where it is. If it is indeed a willow...I will move it this fall. Surely I will be able to tell by then.

I just had that same question on plant id forum, it's a Black Willow. I'm making a bonsai out of it.

Thanks wormfood! I guess I should still plan on moving it this fall?

If you want to grow willow I'd get the real one. Black willows tend to grow stubby and, here in Florida, have bugs that just suck it leafless. I have a couple of real willows, just took a twig from a tree and grew it in water. They are a great rooting hormone.
