I am wondering if planting Hellebore under my Dogwood would survive, it seems most of the plants I put there do not do well with the exception of spring blooming bulbs. Even the grass under the limb spread of the Dogwood does not do well. Does the Dogwood drip some kind of sap which affects plantings under it?
Compatible Plants for under a Dogwood Tree
I think the problem is that grass doesn't grow well in shade, and many shade-loving plants need more moisture, but the dogwood will take a lot of the moisture there which makes it a dry shade area. Hellebores are supposed to be tolerant of dry shade so they may work for you. Here are a couple links with other plant suggestions...make sure you check that the plants they recommend are OK for your zone.

There's tons more out there if you google plants for dry shade, that's just a sampling.
