rain, rain, and more rain

I have lost count of the amount of rainfall I have had. My tomatoes are nearly standing in water. I can't side dress, plow, or plant. Today I do late starts for squash, cucumbers and specialty melons in the hope they will produce up till frost. I will have to put an early (short growing days) corn in by poking seed into the mud and put newspaper down between rows of green beans. The grass in the beans will soon out grow them. I never finished tying up my heirloom tomatoes and I have some great suckers that would allow me to plant for late tomatoes, BUT it will not stop raining. I know this is life on the farm, but how do you overcome the discouragement? Somebody show my a silver lining, quick. Thanks for letting me vent, Carol

And here we are , facing drought conditions in Minnesota. The weatherman forecasts rain every other day but it hardly rains. :-(

We could sure use it also. North Carolina and Tennessee is hogging all the rainfall. Not as bad as last year, but it is still pretty dry here.

We could use some of that too - for the last several years. We have been blessed with several weeks of unseasonable cool weather in the mid 70's. It's usually nasty hot by now. The downside is the heat loving tomatoes and peppers not getting what they like!

Here to in Maryland (zone 7) it's seems like 40 days and 40 nights. I not complaining because it replenishes the waterways and helps everything and us too. It's just strange how mother nature gives and takes. Thank Goodness I did a small raised Veggie Bed this year..

It hasn't rained here in over 2 weeks.

Our rain typically comes Nov to Mar and then we are lucky to get 10 inches

I don't know what I'd do with myself if water fell from the sky. We get about 10" in a good year, and much of that comes in July/August but it comes down so fast that it all drains into the river without really watering anything. It's not unusual to go weeks and months without any measurable precipitation.

If it helps any for every plant you may lose to rot and overwatering I'll probably lose two to wind, or squirrels, heat, insects, or possibly even hail. It does get discouraging sometimes but all we can do is try.

I have to say that we could definitely us the rain here also. We are under a severe drought however the summer before last was so wet. It rained 16" in one night. My garden was a bust because it was so wet all summer. I couldn't even get in my garden, I should have grown rice! It is god to know that somebody is getting rain though.

Same here. Just keeps raining and raining. It's finally gotten hot, though. Took me forever to get the garden in because it was too wet. Now my peppers are suffering from too much water. I think some of my garlic rotted. It's good for the plants that can make it through this weather because I don't have a lot of time to water by hand. Kind of a rough year dealing with mother nature in some areas.

Here in SE Wisconsin we have flooded basements for the second consecutive year on my block. This added to the unseasonably cool June we've had so far means that I'm afraid I will go ANOTHER season without a bell pepper to show for it!

Same here in MA. We've had maybe 4 sunny days for June so far, evening temps were still dropping into the high 40's/low 50's up until maybe last week, and the days have rarely been hitting 70's. The lower branches of my tomatoes are turning yellow and dropping off from too much rain, pole beans that would grow literally 4" in a day last year are doing maybe 1/2" a day this year. Like Veepster, wondering if there will be enough summer to get any peppers, or tomatoes with any flavor. It's so discouraging. The irony is that before my gardening days, I would have been perfectly happy with this weather--I hate the heat. Now this just makes me realize how hungry I'd be if I totally depended on my garden for food.

I also live in Albuquerque, NM and biggest problem for me
has been high winds. I've learned to carefully stake and tie my
tomatoes so they don't blow to smithereens. During the
July/August "monsoon" season, slashing rains usually
just beat up the plants and do little in the way of moisture.
We have low humidity here and things dry out in a heartbeat.

It's why I do all my veggies in deep containers against
a wall. We'll have plenty of tomatoes, yellow squash
and bell peppers this year.

seems everyone has too much or too little--we are watering all of our newly planted trees right now as temps have been in the high 90's with no significant rainfall in 3 weeks--thank goodness the watering restrictions have been lifted!

What is rain?

Ok I take back everything I said about it never raining here. I'm already sick of it. It's damp humid and miserable here now, kind of like Florida. I do not want to live in Florida. I will be glad when desert conditions return.

I'll be glad if we ever get some rain!

I had rain yesterday evening while I was watering my garden, of course as soon as I stopped watering it stopped raining

fremar-mother nature wouldn't have it any other way lol . Happened to me many times.

It sputtered just enough to get my new car dirty last Thursday. Does that count?

Here in Northeast Louisiana the temp is topping a 100 every day and no rain since the middle of May. I love the heat but would like to see a good general rain. Humity is high even dry as it is. The dehumidifier in my house is pulling out about 7 gallons of water a day.

Put hay between your rows if you have. It will walk into the ground and help your garden next year.

Still raining non-stop here in MA. A friend just sent me this (a few years old, but very apropos of current weather), so I thought I'd share with anyone else who is drowning....

Pretty funny. I have felt like that in reverse here before. Opening my eyes day after day with sunny blue skies. Sounds good, but can get boring, not to mention problematical if it is during the short time period we DO have for a chance of rain. Rumor has it on the TV weather that we may have some thunderstorms. Those are more likely to bring fires than water.....
