Lime Poisoning?

Newark Valley, NY

I think my father added too much lime to the soil. As a result, nothing sprouted, and the plants I started all died. Is there anything I can do apart from replacing the soil?

You need to define " lime". If he used calcium carbonate ( limestone) or calcium-magnesium carbonate( dolomitic limestone) You don't have a problem with vegetables. By adding nutrients you can grow vegetables in limstone sand. If he used hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) it is possible to overdose. Good news is that it is water soluble and breaks down fast. Wait a month or so, and it will have changed into other compounds. I expext that you have issues other than "lime" tho.

thanks for that advice. I think it was an overdose. My potatos are now doing quite well, and I put in new plants that have taken off nicely. I've decided not to re-seed though, since we're already 8 weeks into the season. I'm sure I'll have better results next year. I appreciate the information - a LOT!

Call me crazy but I like to get to the bottom of problems. Find out exactly what was added, and in what quantity, and to try to plan or solve the problem for the next year rather than just wishing and hoping. Maybe that's just me. ;)
