weed killer vs perrywinkle

North Tonawanda, NY(Zone 5a)

Id like to have a garden with perriwinkle...Ive heard that this plant can be somewhat invasive...I have a garden spot picked out that is surrounded on three of the four sides...the fourth side faces the lawn...my question is: will weed killer take care of (kill off) this plant where I dont want it to spread...is just cutting it (when I cut the grass) adequately going to keep it contained (and the part that I cut with the mower going to die and just allow the grass to grow)?

You mean vinca major, I guess. Some people call an annual flower by the name periwinkle. Vinca major is a vine, and it is somewhat aggressive. If you use weed killer on it it will spread by the roots to other areas and kill out large areas, so you don't want to do that. Mowing it would work but wouldn't look so good. It would be better to put a vertical barrier between where you want the vine and the grass area. You can buy the barrier if you check around- you have to bury it probably 24 inches to keep the roots from growing under it.

dp72: Would flashing material, such as used in roofing, work for the purpose of under ground barrier. I have an ivy bed that is ill contained and I gowing to rework it this fall.

Yes- anything that won't rot. The depth is important. Four inches and the roots would go right under it! Flashing is a thin metal, isn't it? That ought to be great if it's deep enough. Just leave an inch or so above ground so you'll know where it is! Best of luck.

Dp: Sorry for the delay in this reply. Flashing material is generally a flat rolled sheet of aluminun or galvanized. Less than a 16th of an inch thick and normally 10 to 12 inches wide. Like really heavy reynolds aluminum foil. Thanks for the well wishes and the advice.
