I am fairly new at the whole gardening thing. But In my back yard I have a chainlink fence that is holding back the top of the hill. Down at the bottom of the fence there is a lot of rock. On the inner side of the fence I have planted various annual flowers along with some cannas bulbs. So I really dont have room to plant the Carolina Jessamine in here too. I was wondering if I could plant the Carolina Jessamine on top of the hill just a little bit below the fence line? Will the Carolina Jessamine grow up and over my fence so it will be comeing on both sides of the fence? My goal is to get the fence covered up so that you cant see it. I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone might have. Thank you so much for your time and your patience in helping me with this! It is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks Again,
Babie_Girl!!
Need Help With the Carolina Jessamine!!
Barbie_Girl : Years ago I planted Confederate Jasmine outside a Lani. We had a hot tub that was five feet away. I used PVC Latice as a screen/trelis for privacy. In a Year, the Jasmine had climed the 8' Latice and was attached to the sreen enclosure over the hot tub. Within two years I had to prune it to be able to see the latice. Fertilizer and South FL sun were helpful variables. Yes I think it will hide, if not take down the fence.
Go for it
Mike
Confederate jasmine is a different plant, but I think the Carolina jessamine will do fine as a fence covering...if it's hardy in your zone. I think it's only hardy to zone 7, and most of the people I've seen around here posting from MO are in zone 5 or 6 so it might be a bit borderline for you at best, and if it does die back over the winter then you may not get the effect you're looking for even if it comes back in the spring.
Confederate jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55230/ (also not hardy for zone 5/6)
Carolina jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1262/
Unfortunately most of the vines I grow wouldn't be hardy in your area so I don't have any better suggestions, but I'm sure someone else will have some ideas for you.
ecrane Thanks for the clarification. That is exactly why I am on this web site. Everytime I get on line I learn somthing.
