The Pink Flaked vines are about done. I have dropped some more seeds into the pot and also some seeds for Purple Flaked, too! I am going to try to cross the two vines/blooms. It would be neat to see blooms with both purple and pink flaked on each bloom! Seeds took about 2 days to sprout! :-)
Becky's MGs Part 6
Someone asked about my Water Lotus. I have two large pots of them growing. I am not even sure what cultivar each pot is growing. I guess when they bloom I wll figure it out. They are different lotus in each pot. This is the lotus that overwintered and survived. It did not bloom for me last year, so I have no idea what the blooms will look like. Can't wait to see what they are!
I moved the Yellow Chinese Evening Glory outside and it is getting full sun. I thought is was going to die at first after the shock of sunlight, but it is now making a nice recovery and sending out vine shoots all over. I think this one also has a spider mite issue as well. Need some suggestions on how to combat the mites!
I have a LOT of blooms on my Coral Honeysuckle vines along the side fence. And much to my delight, I have seen a hummingbird sipping nectar from these blooms the past few days. I thought the birds had migrated north, but apparently at least one didn't! It's always a thrill to see a hummer! They are just too darn fast to get a photo of. Anyway, here are the blooms the birds seem to love in the summer.
Joseph - Me, too! Those leaves draw your eye right to the plant! I wonder if this vine will produce any kind of blooms? I don't know much about the sweet potatoe vines at all.
Becky, I love your Lotus in pots, but do you have lots of mosquitoes because of the standing water?
Yep! That is the really bummer part of a water garden. I need flowing water to avoid the mosquitos. (sigh) I get eaten up alive in the early morning and late afternoon/early evening as well as at night. I need to find some of those mosquito dunks. HD used to carry them, but don't anymore. :-((((
my sweet potato vine is going gangbuster. I have the lime green one and the black one too. The deer keep eating the black ones, but not the green one.
loved the tour of your place tonight, I really love those blue blooms oof yours, and the three tiered hanging basket is awsome.. I had to trim all my "Blackies" and "Goldfingers" tonight in between rains, I will try hard to send some rain your way. Those zinnias are nice, mine are blooming now to, and I loved the butterfly and the frog pictures, thanks! Here ditch day lilly is invasive and wild everywhere, and mine get thinned out every spring.. I just move them to other parts of the yard..
lovely blooms Becky.... i planted most of mine out side and they seem to be sulking.... at least i get to enjoy yours :-)

Loved the tour too Becky. Your MG's blooms are outstanding and all your garden too.
Thank you Nicole, Debra, and Colin! :-) And Helena, too! :-)
I had lots of blooms today, but nothing other than they usual suspects! I did water everything with Bloom Booster a week ago and am seeing more blooms on the vines along my back privacy fence. AND ... drum roll please ...
I actually had some pollen in the blooms of Diluted Fuji no Muraski today! The only bad thing ... I got up late and the bees beat me to the blooms so there is no telling if any seeds will be crosses. I did hand-pollinate them anyway for good measure. :-)
The vines along my picket fence are winding down. Most are producing seed pods and I have been collecting lots of seeds from a few of those vines. The two biggest seed producers so far are the White Kikyou and the Hanafubuki (which is great since it was a low seed producer last year). None of the vines along the picket fence got very big (unlike last year when they were huge). The ones along the back privacy fence are quite long and large. Just goes to show ya that soil is everything. I hope to be able to amend the soil along the picket fence before I plant the next grow-out. I expect the vines to be dead or dying by the end of June. :-/
I am going to go ahead and start seeds in styrofoam cups. I've been using those type of cups with other seedlings and have had excellent results. The white reflects the sun and the foam insulates the roots from all the heat. So I am thinking of trying that with MG seeds, too! We shall see ...

Becky, I love using my styrofoam cups to start out the seeds. Especially when I'm only doing 1 or 2 seeds. Lately, I just do it in the container since they are coming up faster - I guess due to warm weather.
Darren - LOL about the giant finger! Great looking blooms and vines! Whoo Hoo!
Wagon ho ... round em' up and head em' out ...
