The ever-gorgeous Diluted Fuji no Muraski. I was looking all over this vine today and see very few seed pods. I am going to have to grow another one and see if I can't get some seeds. It would be a real shame for this one to be lost forever. Gotta save this one for sure!!!!
Becky's MGs Part 6
yes the last one you have to safe lol to trade with me heheheheheheh i just LOVE blue flowers they are so rare and i just love them thxs so much for sharing your pics please keep them coming
"Pink Beauty" brug showing a flush of blooms! I could smell the blooms at the opposite end of my yard! Between those blooms and the Moonflower blooms .... mmm ... mmm! :-) :-) :-)
I need to get my "Equador Pink" brug to bloom so that I can cross-pollinate these two brug cultivars to get seeds. Brug's can NOT be self-pollinated. They have to be crossed and each seed from the cross is considered a new cultivar. Isn't that amazing! I've grown several from seeds and they sure grow fast!
Becky,
From your Diluted Fuji you can make 2 different types
The blue and the white
I prefer this one

Did you tag differently the blooms ?
Dany - I tagged all the blooms on the Diluted Fuji no Muraski, but am not seeing any seed pods. Period. Which is a serious disappointment. No seeds, no new vines. I have a couple more seeds which I will start to try to get some seeds for a DFNM vine. I am also thinking that perhaps I can take a cutting and try to root it in water. This is a tough dilemma because I don't know for sure what the other seeds I have will produce. I am assuming the same type of vine. :-)
Becky, your blooms are just awesome! Love all your plants.
Becky,
From the time the diluted Fuji No Murasaki turned up in my yard, it had lots of blooms, but the entire vine produced very few seeds (12) all summer. I thought the problem was my inexperience at pollination, until seeing your posts. Since you are seeing the same thing, I wonder if the mutation is causing the low seed pod production?
Sarah - That may very well be the case. I have had similiar "crosses" of cultivars that gave a low production of pollen just as this vine is doing. My DFNM is planted near another vine in the same container and potting mix. The other vine is producing lots of pollen and is making lots of seed pods. So I don't believe it is the growing conditions. I do think some vines just don't duplicate easily. And perhaps the mutation which creates these unusual blooms affects reproduction as well. You and I are probably correct in our assumptions. It's too bad. I am not sure how to improve the odds for seeds other than crossing it with a vine/bloom that produces seeds abundantly. In doing so, we would probably lose the beautiful mutation of these blooms. :-( :-(
I have a seed or two left and am going to try to grow it again and do a little cross-pollination experiment with any blooms that I can't hand-pollinate with itself. Wish me luck! Thanks for sharing your information and experience about this mutation. It is quite lovely and It will be a sad day to totally lose it. And thank you so much for sharing a few seeds with me. It has been a joy to grow this season! :-)
Becky,
You're right, conditions don't seem to make any difference in the pollen production. On top of the conditions you have mentioned, our climates are very different, as well as soil and temperatures, but your blooms look just exactly like mine did, variations and all. Wishing you best of luck with getting seeds. It was a relief when your seed produced the same mutant blooms. I was hoping they would. Your vine validated the seeds. There was a a little concern that none of the seeds would come true , and then yours did -(whew) :-))) Thanks for posting therm, it's a blast to see them!
Sarah - Did you keep any seeds for yourself of the Diluted Muraski? If so, are you going to try to grow it out again? I can't thank you enough for sharing the few seeds you collected from last year's vine. What a pleasure this vine has been to grow and observe (and photograph) the blooms! :-)
Darren - Welllll ...! Where's the photos??? Huh? Huh? LOL! I am curious to see if you get lots of seeds from your vine by trying to hand-pollinate it with itself. I had to cross that vine last year to get seeds. Another cultivar/specimen that doesn't make seeds easily...
Becky,
I kept one seed, and it is growing right now. So far, it has one unusual looking flower, and very dark green leaves. The 2 flowers that have opened so far do not have the brush stroked look as the ones last year. The vine from last year had a few mildly diluted blooms before it really took off. I was happy to share the seeds. The folks on the MG forum here liked the blooms. It would not have occurred to me dilutedto even collect seeds, had you all not mentioned it. I noticed that each pod had only one seed. That never varied. Twelve of the flowers produced 12 seeds. Since a few members received seeds, maybe there will be a good chance to see what the others blooms are like. Even though the pattern on the flower is pretty "busy" I would have loved variegated leaves, too- a sort of "extreme MG vine" :-)
Sarah
LOL! "Extreme" MG! With variegated leaves - it certainly would have been a psycho vine! LOL!
I hope you get more of the diluted pattern on your lone Muraski vine. Boy! Do I ever hope that!!! Fingers crossed! And I hope you get seeds again, too! I don't think the blooms on mine really started to get the diluted look until several first/early blooms had come and gone. I have noticed that on many of the unusually patterned cultivars. They start off kind of mild-mannered and then Jekyll takes over. :-)
Darren - What do the leaves look like? I honestly do not remember what I sent you. I guess I need to keep better track of what seeds I send folks. :-) Keep posting photos!!!
If the blooms are small, it might be this one: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/beckygardener/10365/

Becky the vines from the Shibori Purple x Gray Lady you sent me are budding now.. Thanks so uch, can't wait to see a bloom..
Darren - It sounds and looks like Ipomoea hederacea. Here is a photo of my leaves from last year: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/53916/ The leaves are actually a bit darker than the photo which was taken using a flash on my camera.
Debra - Awesome! Please post photos of Shibori Purple x Gray Lady blooms. I am very curious to see what your blooms look like. :-)
Oh, I was pleasantly surprise today with this bloom. Wow! I have never seen a morning glory this big and it's a beautiful grape-kool-aid-purple. The photo just doesn't do it justice. Can not wait to see more blooms!!! I believe Joseph gave me 3 of these seeds and I was very conservative in germinating them. I have one left. I'm going to give them to my mother if mine produce seeds.
Do you know how well these produce seeds?
Akatsuki no Murasaki
LiliMerci, beautiful color saturation!
Nicole - Very nice bloom! Those I. nils MGs DO produce some pretty large blooms! That's one of the main reasons I am partial to the I. nils. Congrats on the lovely bloom! See ... now you are getting hooked on MGs! LOL!
Darren - Bummer about the wind. It is hot and stagnet air here. A breeze sounds awful nice... Do let me know what you figure out with that bloom/vine. :-) I hope you get some time to play in your garden soon! :-)
I love weekends! I can go outside early mornings and take my time photographing, hand-pollinating, and tagging blooms! Can ya see my big ole' smile from here??? LOL!
I just have to start today's photos off with a plant I just bought. (Unfortunately, it is NOT for me! Boo Hoo ...) This is a gift for my oldest son. His birthday is this week. He has become most interested in Bonsai plants. I think being married to a Chinese woman has opened up an interest in a different culture for him. Asians do seem to like and grow minature plants. Possibly because many Asians don't have large yards or even yards at all. I could certainly see growing Bonsai plants as another addiction personally. I need to back away from that idea! Hold me back y'all!!!
I am not sure what the plant is, other than some type of Juniper. But I love it! Saw this small place of business along a rural stretch on the main road about 6 months ago and decided I was going check it out in the near future. Well, with my son's birthday coming up, it was the perfect opportunity to go visit this little place of business. The owner was a young (I say that, but could be wrong as Asians don't show their age and everyone seems younger than me these days!! lol) Chinese man who grows them and pots them up. Boy! Did he have some wonderful Bonsai plants! I wished I could hit the lotto. I know where I would go to do a little spending on plants! Hee, hee!
I loved his place. He mainly sells Bonsai plants, but had a Koi pond with some large fish, all kinds of tropical and Asian plants, and was such an interesting person to talk to! I will be back! He's been there 14 years! I never noticed the place before, but they got a new sign that is bright yellow, so it caught my eye while heading up the road. :-)
