confused with seasons

BEDFORDSHIRE, United Kingdom

I am very confused with the gardening terms. eg:
Does half hardy mean the flowers will return next year and the same with hardy.
please tell me they do return as i have planted hundreds of seeds that are half hardy and hardy on the impression they will return for years to come.

The term half hardy, I believe, is kinda like tender perinial(SP? ). Means mild winters your in good shape, Bad winters not so much. I do have some lantana here and it is sold as a tender perinial. I put mulched leaves on them and as long as we don't have to harsh a winter they're good. Half hardy I have also seen refeing to plants that self sow seed well. You may not get the individule plant but chances are you'll get its children if you allow them to run through the seed cycle once or twice during the season as mother nature intended. Sorry I can't spell yet I need more coffee!

I think you're probably looking at annuals which will not return next year unless they reseed. "Hardy" annuals can handle frost so you can sow them outdoors earlier in the season, but they're still annuals so they will only live for one year, but since they can handle frost they can reseed more easily and come back the following year. Half hardy annuals can't tolerate as much frost so you have to wait until a little later in the season to start them outdoors, or else start them indoors. If you are in a zone that doesn't get much frost these can reseed too, but in a colder area they probably wouldn't http://en.mimi.hu/gardening/half-hardy_annuals.html http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071118054108AAi0Ppj Of course if you're in a warmer zone it's possible some of the things you planted will actually be perennials, so if you can tell us what zone you're in and what you planted someone will probably know whether they would come back or not.
