I can only say eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww! Try your county ag. extension agent, most are online and you can send your image to them for i.d. Sure will be interesting what they say.

It is a fungus I believe much like a mushroom. Some call it devils fingers. Do yours smell really bad and tend to draw a large numder of flies?

miavcr: see post of american woman on this or very similar looking fungi. Someone there suggested baking soda and water.

I think you are right, although when I google devil's fingers, the ones that come up have more than one protrusion. Mine only emerges as a single thing. Same family though I think.
thank you.

Yes, bugme, I agree! Eeeeeeeewww, they're nasty!

Miavcr, I am in the Central Valley, Fresno. I also have these come up at times in my yard. Mine smell nasty. They also come up as singletons, but most typically with other types of mushrooms nearby, and typically during wet seasons, although not really cold. We are a dry environment, as a rule. I was hoping to see a response to your query. Well, there is, isn't there?

Now I am wondering what to do about fungi of all sorts which show up in my yard. I always worry about the dogs and fear that the little things are poisonous. So, my final question is what to do to keep fungi out of my yard, if it's even possible.

Someone in the other post suggested backing soda and water. I do not know the reciepe. Might check the other post and/or the local ag extension office. Ag office should be able to give detailed info on exact nature of this invader as well as prevention and control. They grow in the woods around my house but not too close to tree line so I don't worry about them.

Go see my post above and you will see what I have. I believe yours is from the same family and if you click on the two links someone was nice enough to post you will see a lot of "strange" for lack of a better word.

It is a Stinkhorn Fungus. Maybe Lysurus mokusin.
