I am looking for a plant to put in on the back of the house/garage that can take a beating from the water dripping off the roof when it rains. It is mostly shady with just a few hours in the evening.
Thanks!
Need plant suggestion
hostas?
You might think about one of the ilex shrubs. Maybe winterberry. If it is a TON of rain and often, you might consider putting rocks in the hardest hit runoff area and plants on the front edge of that.
I have astilbes and filipendula Kahome planted under my garage roof run-off. They do well in mostly shady locations with lots of moisture.
I like plants like weigela 'rubidor' because its bright for a shady corner and can take the shade and the rain run-off. The other option I would plant there is spiraea vanhouttii. Both these plants can get tall and wide at maturity but neither have the problem of roots like a forsithia intermedia which you can never get out once you plant since the roots, even a small one, will cause the plant to return. The two plants listed above can be easily maintained by clipping after bloom to keep small and manageable or you can let the go to become huge in 15 years. Both will make a statement in the shade once established and both can take the shade even though their growing requireents claim they need full sun. They simply get long and leggy with their new growth in the spring if they are in shade. A few hours of sun should help with that. I hope this helps. D
