Different types of mulch?

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

There are a bunch of different types of mulch
cedar, pine, pine nuggets, black mulch (dyed?), red mulch (dyed?)

-I need a good choice for a variety of container plants?
climbing roses, honey suckle, clematis, meyer lemon, dwarf fig. are all due for spring mulch.

-Should banana peppers, basil, and cherry tomato plants get mulch?

Mulch with compost first then add any of the others you like. Cedar will not decompose as fast as the others and I don't use it. I like mulch that becomes soil. I never mulch any herbs or veggies.

I have a dairy farm near me that makes mulch with manure. I finished planting the major stuff today so next week I am of to buy a couple of yards.

I personally use mulch on everything, but I don't plant veggies, my yard is too small. I'm not sure about the black mulch, but the red cedar is definitely dyed, I wouldn't use it myself. I use the smallest pine mulch I can find. I have a dog and he likes to eat it, so I stay away from the stick type. I too like mulch that becomes soil, I've had good luck with the pine bark. The one I get from my local garden center is triple shredded, or something to that effect. Breaks down nicely.

it's so hot here most of the year that i mulch everything, including vegis. i use small pine bark too. don't use cypress for ecological reasons and the dyed stuff is horrible. i recently read that the recycled rubber mulch has toxins from the used tires, so that's no good either. straw is probably the best for vegis, imho. not hay, that has seeds.

I use cedar near the house- anything else can attract termites- except maybe pine straw or rubber mulch. The other "wood" mulch is fine as long as it's not next to a house or fence.

There's a long mulch thread that we finished discussing the other week. Check it out!
