I left some volunteer maple seedlings to grow near that pear on the side of the house, but I'm thinking it will take FOREVER to get big.
Coffee Break #13 Come on in the A/C is own.
Norway maples grow VERY fast.
Don't get a Norway Maple Jen! You'll regret it!
I don't know why they even sell those trees (the Bradford Pears). They are planted all thoughout the parking lot at our local supermarket strip mall. They're all young, and most of them aren't doing well. Dying branches everywhere. It's too bad the owner of the mall doesn't maintain the "landscape". It could be very pretty.
Glad no one was hurt at your house Jen! They're expensive, but you could get a hammock stand. I can't live without my hammock. It's so d@#m wet though, I miss it! Sunny today, but the hammock is soggy.
What is wrong with Norway Maple?? We had two huge ones in front of our former farm house lived there for 50 years, really had no problems with them, it almost air conditioned the house, except raking tons of leaves in the fall is a bit of work. just like any tree with foliage.
Don't like them either, not only are the leaves a problem but there are always branches coming down too
Allison - what cute photos of your 3 tykes!! They're really cute!!
Wren - nice to see you posting! Thanks for starting a new thread.......we escaped from Hades and are now loving the cool up here in NH........hope you can escape too!!
Robin - SO happy to hear about the great test results!! That's so terrific!
Jen - whew! Get rid of that tree! Sugar maples grow pretty quickly!
On my street, Norway maples have 150% germination rate, you have to weed them out of the lawn or garden all summer - they have shallow roots and they crack and they make SUCH dense shade that nothing else can grow under them. They were planted by the town in the 1950's and one by one they're dying and being replaced with (you guessed it) Bradford pears! I think they're now considered a weed in MA, at least the state isn't planting them any more. They're beating out the (native) sugar maples.
Right--Norway maples are now illegal to plant in MA. Try a native 'red'maple if you want a maple there.Evidently Bradford pears should not be planted either.
Thanks everyone for your good wishes! Anna's hummers are so pretty---wish we had them here----but I wouldn't like to be bopped by one in a dive!
Will be calling around tomorrow to see who can take the tree down(the fastest and cheapest) that's next to the house, hubby can do the one that fell today unless I get a good price.
Redchic where are you when I need you???
This guy's cheap.

lol
Great news Robin!!! OMG timber is right flowerjen EEK! Thankfully no one was hurt (except the pear) and it looks like nothing was smushed WEW! Today (as suspected) I discovered that indeedy doo I had accidently planted Calvin the Giant Albino Cockroach sigh. I really have to stop burying things alive. Here he is back on the look out for Damien the Spawn of Satan Tree Rat.
Nice. How close was the camera?
I don't like the Norway maple because it plants thousands of seeds in my garden beds, driveway, even in the gutters every spring. Oh, the seedlings are never ending and if you let them go a month or two, you need two arms and some body weight to pull them out. If I had nothing but grass that got mowed under them, it would be different.
Victor! How do you find this stuff? That was a close call with that guy!
Glad you found Calvin dahlianut.
Cute hummer Allison!
I'm LUVING the birdcam!!!
about a foot and a half away..... we are going to play around with it a bit more today... then going to move it by our other feeders
Just caught up...Allison that B-day gift is awesome! Randy has great taste, lucky you!!
Robin im very glad all the test came out OK...big sigh of relief im sure!
Jen sorry about the tree(s) and and sorry about the Norway Maples too!

Yes, im not liking what im hearing about it but I love the variegated look of this tree.
It is a striking tree. My neighbor has one and it is reverting back to some green.
I was reading about that the other day... I think it said you need to prune it in order to keep it from reverting backing. Not positive as I seem to have aquired some sort of condition where I no longer retain what i read! I think it has something to do with menopause....I hope it's only temporary!!!! lol
This tree is huge - would be tough to prune, too bad they didn't keep up with it.
What did it for me was I passed a yard with 8 trees lining the length of the yard. One dark green maple, one variegated, one dark green ect.......alternating like that completely around the yard. It was really striking!
I just want one. lol
That variegated is very pretty.
What kind of maple do you want, Celeste??
Victor - thanks for that great link......so interesting!!
This one Louise........

nice maple!
What about investigating beeches? We have an Ameican beech in the front yard & love it. There is also a copper beech with purple leaves that you might look into.
Yes, but think of all those walnuts coming down----they're huge! We have a couple planted down at the dam, I picked them up on occasion, but can't crack them---I read you have to wait a year after husking, but the rodents would get them before that time! And black hands for a week!
Not to mention nothing likes to grow under the B.W. tree.
Robindog! I'm just catching up and I am sooooooo happy that the tests on DH came back OK! I'm relieved, too. He's such a sweetheart of a guy.
Sherrie - read my gag article tomorrow! All about money, money, money!
I need to dig all my plants in my shade garden so they don't get trampled when they take down the tree, this outta be fun.
