Three Persicaria that ate the pool garden:

Here's another one ... mind you, the garden center where I purchased these told me these were the polite, non-gigantic variety.

And lastly, the third. After I hacked it back by 1/2 to keep it from eating my recovering from last year's Japanese Beetle onslaught Mme Hardy rose on the tower to the right. These Persicaria are so messy. But from a distance, they are a big wow.

And, can anyone ID this thing? I vaguely remember buying it. But clearly had no idea what I was doing ... I got to get it outta there. Oh, and It's having babies. Thanks for any info~

Sorry, no can do. It's a white flower, tall, perennial. ^_^

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Here it is full view and circled to give you a sense of how tall the dang thing is ... look at it next to 4 year old Nine Bark. Yikes.

Thanks for the new thread, wren, although up here it's almost still as likely to be 60 and drizzling as 80 - 90 (or higher) and muggy. Although my DSS in Atlanta called me today and said "any day when the humidity equals the temperature isn't very nice." 90 and 90, not so good, 60 and 60, I can't recall, is that cool and clammy? Warm and springy? I guess you have to convert into Celsius to get really nice weather: 22C and 22 humidity would be ideal.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

No A/C here! It's only 65. It is however sunny. I've been sewing for DD.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh if only I could win the LOTTO!!! I would be up there is a heart beat.

My poor memory is acting up. But the tall plant looks like a herb that starts with A. Don.t you just hate it when you mind gives so part of an answer and not the rest. Ang??? something or other. I will be right back off to do some research. LOl

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bill - the Mets always seem to blow games against the Yankees in incredible ways.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Could this be it ? Angelica

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Angelica? It did look like some think in what I think of the umbrella family - the Apiaceae family with round UMBELS for flowers, like Queen Anne's lace. Angelica (according to PlantFiles) gets 6 - 8 ft tall, but with chartreuse flowers. So it ain't that, but something from that family. Daisygrrl, does the foliage have a fragrance?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Wren, we were probably on the angelica page at the same time!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well I looked in up on line first. And some types do have white flowers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelica

Cuyahoga Falls, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi. I think what you have is Valerian.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I was thinking Valerian, too, mainly because of the leaves. Flowers have a light talcum-powder type fragrance.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

we don't need AC... we need a big ole hair dryer

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Y'all having rain? Down here we where talking about building an Ark!!!!

One nice thing about the heat is we having tomatoes. Nothing like warm tomatoes right off the vine!!!

Sandy

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Hmmmm... archangel/angelica or valerian ... they BOTH look right ... ???

And they both sound like something I'd pick up ... say, at an end of the season discount sale LOL~

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

victor i think you meant ingrediBALL ways - man we should be three games up - and now i know Dave is part of the evil empire!

get them today - "think gumbee quote from SNL!!"

Thomaston, CT

Last night I was set never to watch the Mets again-- today----they redeemed themselves, just in time! Glad to hear from you, Wren---those tomatoes sound awful good. We got good news yesterday---my DH's tests were both normal----I can breathe again.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

that is great news.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Doing a happy dance and letting out a big sigh of relief!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know I am getting ton of rain.. I had Randy double check the pump in the crawl space... my neighbor was baling out his basement with a shop vac today

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Down here we had flooding all over the state. Rained again to day-at least it cooled things down.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Great to hear, Robin. I have lost so many family members to smoking that it's really nice to hear some good news.

I knew Bradford pears are very short lived(around 25 yrs) we lost one in the front yard last year and knew it was just a matter of time...I was hoping it wouldn't happen though, all the rain probably didn't help....now I'm really worried about the one closest to the house.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good thing no one was hurt. They're horrible trees.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

wow

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know...good thing I was out there playing with Wall-e at the time cause he would have been running around under it....
It really stinks, I was going to put a hammock under there.

Should I take preventive measures on the last one standing and cut it down??? They only thing that really stinks is that's what's creating my shade garden.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

was not aware they did not last - that explains why not many dg folks here like them - don't have any although i like them in the spring.

your call jen - i would think about a replacement tree(s). maybe a sugar maple that would grow pretty fast and provide the shade you would want.
