After eating fresh summer plums, how soon can I plant the seeds and successfully grow a plum tree?
growing plums
This is a generalized answer to your question .....
Most fruit trees are grafted onto standard root stalk. This is done because the root stalk of standard trees is stronger, healthier, preferred. SO - if you take a seed from some fruit you have purchased in a store, or even picked off someone's cultivated tree - your tree - when and IF it spouted and began to put down roots - will be hard pressed to succeed.
If it would work - you are talking YEARS - before you would get anything harvest worthy.
I have several plum trees, and there is a LOT of fruit drop each year. I have yet to see a single volunteer plum tree sprout as a result.
I don't know if this helps at all - but if I was wanting to grow plums - I would head to the nursery and buy two trees. Many plums need a cross pollinator, if they are NOT self-fertile.
Happy gardening.
