Im going away in july and am researching watering ideas. came across dri-water but couldnt find one user based review. has anyone used it here or heard of it??
dri-water??
anyone? just sounds so crazy. so convenient im not sure why its not more famous either for working or being a scam. supposedly they planted a million trees in the desert with this product as the only source of water. i think i have to order and see for myself and report my findings here.
Oh by all means buy one! This fine product rates right up there with the Off clipon and the hanging tomatto bag. Both of which my neihbors bought and said we got took on that one too! My all time favorate was the lifetime bug killer for the low price of 19.99. My buddy was so proud of his two handsize blocks of wood. Manual operation required. Invest in a good water hose and sprayer. Ask your neighbor to look after your garden when you leave and share some crop with them. Thats what we do in our neighborhood. Hey enjoyed the humor and bless good neighbors
hahahah. i hear ya and im a skeptic but the million trees in the desert sold me. i also spoke with the inventor on the fone and he was of course, very convincing. my whole question to him was how could one quart of anythign produce mor ethen its weight in water to the plant? violates all sorts of physical laws. he basically said it doesnt, but it provides water directly to the root system. he said that when we water 85% of the water is wasted. im still skeptical but it does make sense. check this out:

I will bite the bullet and buy a couple and will post the gods honest truth about the thing. i figure it this way, im out 50 bucks or so if its a scam, but if it isnt gardening just got a whole lot easier
also, i live in brooklyn, my neigboor wouldnt pee on me if i was on fire.
How long are you planning on being gone?
1 week. but from talking to the guy if u put 3 quarts to each tomato plant it should last 90 days with no external water. it sounds crazy but i may try it on a couple plants
I wonder if it's something like silica gel. Maybe pulls moisture from the air and the ground sucks it out? Nope, can't be that would suck out ALL the moisture.
I found this site (Garden Crystals) - you work them into the soil and it looks like it might be somewhat the same.
http://www.crystals.us/WSApplication.htm
Contains 94% co-polymer of polyacrylamide (cross-linked); 5 - 6% moisture; and residue less than 0.1% monomer.
And http://www.crystals.us/
hmmmmm
funghi2-if you are planning on only being gone for one week, a thorough deep watering right before you leave should be fine. any potted plants you have that dry out rather quickly can be moved to a shadier part of the yard (or inside) and should be fine. I have left for up to 10 days before in July/Aug with temps well into the 90's; watered thoroughly right before I left, and everything looked great when I got back.
jeez melissa , when u got home was the soil really dry? the vacation is the ultimate concern but after reading up on driwater it would be cool to only have to lug around my huge watwer bucket only once a week or so
bodecoa, i got the crystals and mixed it with dirt. its been raining here everyday and the crystals blew up like jello. pretty cool. i wonder if it drys out to a crystal again and repeats the process or it just does this trick once
Too cool! I remember when I was young there was a small packet of silica gel in .....something, I can't remember what, but it had soaked up a bunch of liquid. Me being the curious type, I opened it and the crystals had turned to wet gooey gel that left water on my hand when I touched them. Of course my mother immediately made me throw them away when I showed her, saying something about silica being poisonous - "it says on the package do not eat, now go wash your hands!" -- "But I'm not eating it!" It was really cool, nonetheless.
